Dual threat on the diamond: Aaron Schunk contributing in many ways for Georgia baseball
It was the bottom of the seventh inning at Foley Field on April 4. Georgia was leading its rival, Georgia Tech, by a narrow margin of 1-0.With the bases loaded and one out, “Brass Monkey” by the Beastie Boys blared through the stadium speakers, which could only mean one thing: Georgia sophomore Aaron Schunk was coming to the plate, looking to provide some insurance runs for the Bulldogs. As he often does in more ways than one, Schunk delivered. With a single to center field, Schunk scored catcher Mason Meadows and opened the door for two more Georgia runs to score in the inning. Then came the top of the eighth inning. Schunk headed back out to his regular defensive post at third base, as reliever Zac Kristofak pitched a scoreless half-inning. And while most of the Georgia fielders headed back to the dugout for the bottom of the eighth, Schunk went in a different direction, trotting out to the Georgia bullpen on the right side of the diamond to get in some warmup pitches.Once … [Read more...] about Dual threat on the diamond: Aaron Schunk contributing in many ways for Georgia baseball
OPINION: Don’t support the Georgia Aquarium expansion
The Georgia Aquarium released plans in 2018 to build a new shark exhibit, which will open in 2020. While many are excited for the new project, people need to keep in mind the environmental harm that aquariums cost the community. In Defense of Animals ranked the Georgia Aquarium as the fourth worst tank for dolphins and whales in 2016 due to its importation of wild-caught whales, the size of the enclose and the “dying pool,” where three Beluga whales died between 2012 and 2015. The aquarium disregards the animals’ needs for socialization and space, instead keeping cetaceans in cramped, isolated facilities. While there may be other animals in the tank, the stress of confinement and lack of natural environment prevents whales from interacting with one another as they normally would. Georgia Aquarium’s expansion includes touch tanks, which will allow visitors to pet and interact with tiger sharks, hammerheads and other animals included. Touch tanks, while promoted as … [Read more...] about OPINION: Don’t support the Georgia Aquarium expansion
OPINION: Georgia citizens should support the Georgia Aquarium expansion
One of the world’s largest aquariums is set to begin its expansion this month of April. The Georgia Aquarium announced that it will create one of its largest exhibits yet, a floor to ceiling exhibit for a variety of sharks. The Georgia Aquarium is a non-profit organization and with its plan to undertake this $100 million project, Georgia’s citizens should support the aquarium. The deadline for the project is expected to be in 2020 and the exhibit’s goal is to allow people to get as close to the sharks as possible through the glass tank. This project is significant because since the creation of the aquarium almost 13 years ago, the Georgia Aquarium has been a major tourist spot in Atlanta. Located near Centennial Park which is also surrounded by the CNN Center and the World of Coke, the Aquarium generates a lot of revenue. The expansion will generate even more jobs and tourism for the state, and that should be supported by Georgia citizens.Additionally, the Georgia … [Read more...] about OPINION: Georgia citizens should support the Georgia Aquarium expansion
