Red was also painted on her legs and groin. While she yelled “Don't rape us!” security quickly encircled her and took her off the red carpet. Representatives for the festival didn't immediately comment. George W. Bush Mistakenly Says ‘Brutal Invasion Of Iraq’ During Speech About Russia-Ukraine War
Former President George W. Bush had a slip-up while speaking Wednesday in Dallas about the war in Ukraine. Bush was condemning the invasion of Ukraine and discussing what he sees as a dangerous threat to democracy, both domestically and internationally, when he made the gaffe. “In contrast, Russian elections are rigged. Political opponents are imprisoned or otherwise eliminated from participating in the electoral process,” Bush said. “The result is an absence of checks and balances in Russia and the decision of one man to launch a wholly unjustified and brutal invasion of Iraq. I mean, of Ukraine.” Speaking in Dallas this afternoon, former President George. W Bush made a significant verbal slip-up while discussing the war in Ukraine. He tried referencing what he described as the “wholly unjustified and brutal invasion” — but said Iraq, instead of Ukraine. pic.twitter.com/tw0VNJzKmE — Michael Williams (@michaeldamianw) May 19, 2022 Bush then shrugged and … [Read more...] about George W. After string of adventures, ancient gold ring back in Greece
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 ATHENS, Greece (AP) — A more than 3,000-year-old gold signet ring that was stolen from an Aegean island in World War II, crossed the Atlantic, was bought by a Nobel Prize-winning Hungarian scientist and ended up in a Swedish museum has found its way back to Greece. It was the latest in a series of coups by Greek authorities seeking the return of works plundered from the antiquities-rich country — even though an initial effort by the Swedish museum to return the ring apparently fell between the cracks of 1970s bureaucracy. The Greek culture ministry said Friday that the gold Mycenaean-era work from Rhodes, decorated with two facing sphinxes, was willingly returned by Swedish officials who provided full assistance with documenting the artifact and its provenance. Greek experts confirmed the identification, and the piece was handed over in Stockholm by Vidar Helgesen, executive … [Read more...] about After string of adventures, ancient gold ring back in Greece
Book World: Deborah Birx’s unseen fight to stop Trump’s covid falsehoods
Silent Invasion By Deborah Birx Harper. 506 pp. $29.99 - - - On April 23, 2020, with the United States in the throes of the first covid-19 wave, President Donald Trump opined that doctors should investigate whether shining ultraviolet light or injecting disinfectant into the body might treat the disease. To back him up, he turned to the White House coronavirus response coordinator, the physician and public health expert Deborah Birx. "Deborah, have you ever heard of that - the heat and the light . . . relative to this virus?" Birx, though visibly uncomfortable, answered politely, "Not as a treatment." She went on to say that fever does help the body fight infection. She managed to add, "But I've not seen heat or light -" before Trump interrupted her. I was a physician then on the front lines of the pandemic in a New York City intensive care unit, and I felt angry at Birx when I saw that clip. Her tepid response made me think she was more concerned with avoiding the rage of … [Read more...] about Book World: Deborah Birx’s unseen fight to stop Trump’s covid falsehoods
Book World: Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey share their ‘Office’ memories
The Office BFFs: Tales of the Office from Two Best Friends Who Were There By Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey Dey Street Books. 336 pp. $27.99 - - - We could debate all day about what the two most iconic couples from "The Office" - Pam and Jim, and Dwight and Angela - would be doing in 2022. And we certainly will. But it's just as fun to check in on what Jenna Fischer (who played secretary Pam Beesly) and Angela Kinsey (accountant Angela Martin) are doing today. Behind the scenes, the pair formed a best friendship that persists nearly 10 years after the NBC sitcom went off air - and they're probably hanging out in Target's seasonal aisle. They also appreciate a good power walk. "Except Angela stops and gets some sort of pastry," Fischer chided her friend during a recent Zoom interview. "We're still debating this, years later. I don't think it counts as exercise if you get a snack along the way." Kinsey interjected: "I think it does, because I moved my butt to get there." … [Read more...] about Book World: Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey share their ‘Office’ memories
The Liberal Obsession With ‘Disinformation’ Is Not Helping
Photo-Illustration: Intelligencer; Photos: Getty Images On Wednesday, the Washington Post ’s Taylor Lorenz reported on the disastrous rollout of the Department of Homeland Security’s Disinformation Governance Board. Announced on April 27 with a hazy remit to “coordinate countering misinformation related to homeland security,” the initiative generated immediate fierce backlash from conservative pundits and politicians who compared it to the Ministry of Truth in George Orwell’s 1984 . The expert tapped to lead the board, Nina Jankowicz , faced a wave of ferocious, viral, and often personal attacks online as well as scrutiny over her past statements seeming to betray her partisan sympathies. Now, just three weeks later, the Disinformation Governance Board is no more, and Jankowicz has resigned. According to Lorenz and her sources (other disinformation researchers, as well as staffers in DHS and on the Hill), Jankowicz was taken down “by the very forces she dedicated her … [Read more...] about The Liberal Obsession With ‘Disinformation’ Is Not Helping
Nationalize Baby Formula
This is what monopoly looks like. Photo: George Frey/Bloomberg via Getty Images On Wednesday, President Joe Biden invoked the Defense Production Act to address the national baby-formula shortage , ensuring that formula manufacturers are first in line for any ingredients they require and directing the Pentagon to use its contracts with commercial airlines to speed the delivery of formula from overseas. It’s good, at least, to have a president who will wield the power of the executive branch to confront a national crisis. Donald Trump failed to invoke the Defense Production Act in the early days of COVID-19, dithering as the country was ravaged. The baby-formula shortage is a disaster for millions of families and Biden, well aware of his eroding popularity , is right to take it seriously. But the disappearance of baby formula was decades in the making, a product of a flawed economic system that favors the bottom lines of a select few corporate giants. In good times, Americans … [Read more...] about Nationalize Baby Formula
