Actor George Clooney, who supports Hillary Clinton in the Democratic race for the White House, falls in line with Bernie Sanders on at least one issue: the "obscene" amount of money that funds political campaigns. "It is an obscene amount of money," Clooney said in an interview with NBC News that aired Sunday. "The Sanders campaign, when they talk about it, is absolutely right. It's ridiculous that we should have this kind of money in politics. I agree completely." Clooney hosted a $33,000 a plate fundraiser for the Hillary Victory Fund in San Francisco Friday night, where the proceeds would be split among Clinton's primary campaign coffers, the Democratic National Committee's own treasure chests, and various state Democratic parties. Sanders supporters protested outside the venue, calling the fundraisers "political bribery" and urging an end to big money in politics. Clooney, in his NBC interview, said he held the same views as the demonstrators. "They're right to protest. They're … [Read more...] about CBS News Logo George Clooney talks “obscene” money in politics

Last Updated Feb 25, 2010 10:43 AM EST This post was updated February 25, 2010 The paparazzi strike again? Apparently not. The TimesOnline reported two wealthy buyers were purportedly bidding on George Clooney's beloved Italian villa on Lake Como, located in the charming village of Laglio. Clooney, who reportedly paid $10 million for the villa in 2002, and his girlfriend, Italian television anchor Elisabetta Canalis, were reportedly being overrun with paparazzi seeking to shoot ever more revealing photos that will fetch a high price online and in print. According to TimesOnline, the breaking point came when paparazzi climbed over the walls of Clooney's Villa Oleandra and took pictures of an underage girl who was changing in one of the guest rooms. Those bidding on Clooney's Villa include David and Victoria Beckham, for whom paparazzi is already a daily (and apparently much-enjoyed) hazard, and the Russian vodka and banking tycoon Tariko Roustam. The TimesOnline didn't know how much … [Read more...] about George Clooney Selling His Italian Villa On Lake Como?
ROME -- Linger too long near George Clooney's Italian villa in hopes of catching a glimpse of the actor-director and his new bride and you may pay dearly. The town of Laglio, where Clooney bought an 18th-century mansion with private dock on Lake Como a dozen years ago, has hiked fines for those who create "problems of public order" when gathering to gawk on the main road behind the villa or approach by boat closer than 100 meters (110 yards) offshore. Mayor Roberto Pozzi said by phone Tuesday that he signed ordinances last week introducing fines as stiff as 500 euros ($550), five times higher than before. The twin-ordinances - one to discourage land-based out-of-town gawkers, the other for boat-based voyeurs - run through the end of September, covering the spring-summer period when Clooney usually stays in Laglio, at the base of forested foothills stretching toward the Alps. Clooney married London-based human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin in September in Venice. "We haven't seen him … [Read more...] about CBS News Logo Gawking at George Clooney’s Italian mansion will cost you
George Clooney and casino mogul Steve Wynn are not backing down after an angry exchange earlier this month. The showdown in Sin City took place inside Wynn's $2 billion resort. He was having dinner with Clooney and seven other people at a high-end steakhouse when the conversation turned to President Obama, CBS News' Ben Tracy reported. In a very candid statement, Clooney says Wynn "...called the president an (expletive)...I said that the president was my longtime friend, and then he said, 'Your friend is an (expletive)'... At that point I told Steve that HE was an (expletive) and that I wasn't going to sit at his table while he was being such a jackass. And I walked out." Wynn said, "Every business guy I know in the country is frightened of Barack Obama and the way he thinks." It's no secret that Wynn dislikes the president and his policies. He has said of the president, "I'll be damned if I want to have him lecture me about small business and jobs." It's also no secret that Clooney … [Read more...] about George Clooney, Steve Wynn feud turns fierce over President Obama jabs
George Clooney is the latest celebrity to criticize the lack of diversity at this year's Oscars. Jada Pinkett Smith and Spike Lee announced on Monday that they would be boycotting the Oscars, and now more stars are joining the conversation. Clooney told Variety that "we're moving in the wrong direction" when discussing the Oscars, pointing out that it seemed as though the Academy was moving backwards from 2004, when actors like Don Cheadle and Morgan Freeman were nominated for awards. He continued, and name-checked several movies he thought were Oscar-worthy. "There were nominations left off the table," the actor said. "There were four films this year: 'Creed' could have gotten nominations; 'Concussion' could have gotten Will Smith a nomination; Idris Elba could have been nominated for 'Beasts of No Nation'; and 'Straight Outta Compton' could have been nominated. And certainly last year, with 'Selma' director Ava DuVernay -- I think that it's just ridiculous not to nominate her." … [Read more...] about CBS News Logo George Clooney, David Oyelowo speak out on Oscars diversity problem
