Carmelo Anthony’s return to Denver doesn’t burn as before; Nuggets beat Knicks
Anymore, the Carmelo Anthony trade lives on the periphery. There are still scattered boos at the Pepsi Center when he touches the ball. There remains scant buzz when he is introduced to the crowd. But he’s not a huge draw in Denver, no longer a must see — even if it is just to come to the game to boo. A sparse audience Tuesday night confirmed that. Photo: Berk Communications This time last year, the only sports cards Rob Gough owned were the ones he’d collected as a kid. Somewhere in his possession are plastic sheets filled with Michael Jordans, Shaquille O’Neals, and assorted members of the 1990s Cincinnati Reds, all mass-produced and worth roughly the cardboard they were printed on. These days, Gough’s collection looks a bit different. The entrepreneur says that by mid-January of this year, he had spent $10 million on various trading cards, a spree that culminated with his biggest purchase yet: $5.2 million for a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle in nearly perfect condition. With that, he shattered the record for the price of a single card. It was a jaw-dropping purchase but hardly an isolated event in a suddenly torrid sports-card market. The previous record for the priciest sale ever had been set just months before, in August … [Read more...] about Why Did Someone Pay $5 Million for a Baseball Card in 2021?
The workers who could get us through this crisis
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is a Democrat from New York. Sheila Davis, DNP, is the CEO of Partners In Health , an organization that works to provide high-quality health care to impoverished communities globally. The opinions expressed in this commentary are their own. View more opinion on CNN. (CNN) Two overlapping crises have our country in a literal death grip: the Covid-19 pandemic that has killed more than 500,000 people , and the crushing economic downturn . We believe there's something that can help. Building a new public health workforce will provide permanent, quality jobs to bolster neglected health systems; create new career pathways, particularly for women and people of color; and ensure greater health equity in the Black and brown communities hardest hit by the virus. Over the last year, Covid-19 has laid bare the failures of our health system, which invests enormous sums in treating illness and paltry sums in preventing it. With limited staff … [Read more...] about The workers who could get us through this crisis
