U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appealed to donors Monday for nearly $4 billion to prevent a catastrophic famine from killing millions of people in war-torn Yemen. “Today, famine is bearing down on Yemen,” Guterres told a virtual pledging conference co-hosted by the United Nations, Sweden and Switzerland. “The race is on, if we want to prevent hunger and starvation from taking millions of lives.” The United Nations says 16 million Yemenis are going hungry, of which five million are one step away from famine. Some 50,000 people have already slipped into famine-like conditions. More than six years of war between the Saudi-backed government of President Abdu Rabu Mansour Hadi and the Iranian-supported Houthi rebels has pushed the Middle East’s poorest country to the brink. Huawei Executive Back in Court to Fight US Extradition
A Canadian court is set to launch hearings Monday on whether a senior Huawei executive should be extradited to the United States. The U.S. wants Meng Wanzhou, daughter of the Chinese telecom’s founder and chief financial officer of the company, extradited to face fraud charges. She was arrested at Vancouver’s airport in 2018 and has been under house arrest in an area mansion since. Her arrest prompted China to arrest two Canadian citizens in apparent retaliation. China also cut imports of several Canadian products. The U.S. said Huawei used a Hong Kong shell company, Skycom, to skirt U.S. sanctions and sell equipment to Iran. Officials allege Meng misled HSBC bank about the company’s activity in Iran. Meng’s lawyers say her arrest was politically motivated and that the U.S used her as a bargaining chip in trade negotiations with China while Donald Trump was president. They plan to cite comments made by the former president as proof. They will also say Canadian officials … [Read more...] about Huawei Executive Back in Court to Fight US Extradition

International Student Enrollment in US Takes Hit
After big economic hits to the U.S. higher education sector over the past few years, experts say recruiting international students will be crucial to the industry’s recovery. International student enrollment in U.S. universities has stalled and retreated in the past three years because of high costs, barriers to immigration and employment pathways, political rhetoric and perceived crime, according to data from the Institute of International Education (IIE). The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated this decline with a 43% drop in the rate of international student enrollment for the fall 2020 semester, according to IIE. And trade wars between the United States and China could cost American universities up to $1.15 billion in lost tuition revenue, a study from the University of California, San Diego says. “Foreign tuition revenues are a crucial aspect of U.S. services exports,” the authors said. “Although much of the conversation on trade with China has focused on the goods trade … [Read more...] about International Student Enrollment in US Takes Hit
Educators Ask Congress to Act as Foreign Students Seek Study Elsewhere
International students continue to feel a chill from political shifts in the U.S. that have made emigration and study more difficult here, says an association of international educators who have called on Congress to respond. “International students create jobs, drive research, enrich our classrooms, strengthen national security, and become America’s greatest foreign policy assets. Yet new international student enrollment is down dramatically across the United States,” NAFSA: Association of International Educators said in a report released this week. The U.S. has long been a leader in attracting foreign students to its colleges and universities. There are more than 1 million international students in the U.S., with half coming from China or India, according to yearly statistics compiled by the Institute for International Education (IIE) . $39 billion industry International education is a $39 billion industry and is significant revenue from some cities and states.
