4 Business The central bank raised it's key interest rate by three-quarters of a point, part of a campaign to tighten credit and slow inflation. Associated Press , News Partner Posted Replies WASHINGTON — The Federal Reserve on Wednesday intensified its drive to tame high inflation by raising its key interest rate by three-quarters of a point — its largest hike in nearly three decades — and signaling more large rate increases to come that would raise the risk of another recession. The move the Fed announced after its latest policy meeting will raise its benchmark short-term rate, which affects many consumer and business loans, to a range of 1.5 percent to 1.75 percent. With the additional rate hikes they foresee, the policymakers expect their key rate to reach a range of 3.25 percent to 3.5 percent by year's end — the highest level since 2008 — meaning that most forms of borrowing will become sharply more expensive. Colorado, now an abortion “safe haven,” prepares for new challenges
Fourth-generation Texan Leah Payne moved to Denver last year in the wake of a new Texas abortion law that imposed some of the strictest abortion restrictions in the nation. “We left our family, friends, sold our house. We couldn’t live somewhere where abortion access was constantly under attack,” Payne told The Denver Post. At 19, Payne, who was on birth control, got pregnant. She didn’t have insurance at the time and decided to have an abortion at a Planned Parenthood clinic. “It was put out there as this big, bad thing that was traumatizing, but I never felt that,” Payne said. “Now, I’m 32, I’m a homeowner here in Denver and have a really successful career, a great partner, and I don’t think any of those things would have happened if I had not had an abortion at 19.” Payne chose her new home after learning about access to reproductive care in the state, and many Americans who woke up on Friday with fewer rights than they had a day prior may be forced to make similar … [Read more...] about Colorado, now an abortion “safe haven,” prepares for new challenges

How 4 Senators Finally Got Gun Control Done
Senators Kyrsten Sinema, Tom Tillis, Chris Murphy, and John Cornyn were key to getting the bill negotiated and past key hurdles. Photo-Illustration: Intelligencer; Photos: Getty Images The scene in downtown Houston threatened to topple the delicate work that had put the U.S. Senate on the cusp of passing the country’s most important gun bill in three decades. Texas senator John Cornyn was walking onto the stage at the state Republican Party’s convention last Friday, and the dark, red-lit room was turning hostile, filling with boos and furious chants of “Say no to Cornyn!” The conservative had been leading the GOP’s negotiations on a round of gun-control proposals following the mass killings in Uvalde and Buffalo that had surprisingly coalesced in a viable framework rather than following the usual pattern of collapsing into failure. Still, the whole endeavor was delicate. Cornyn had been quietly meeting with his Republican colleague Thom Tillis of North Carolina and … [Read more...] about How 4 Senators Finally Got Gun Control Done
Georgia Power proposes 12% increase in bills, with 2023 leap
ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia Power Co. wants to raise customer bills 12% over the next three years to pay for system improvements and higher costs and allow higher profits, the company said Friday in a rate filing with state regulators. The filing kicks off a rate case before the Georgia Public Service Commission, with the five commissioners likely to vote on the plan in December and new rates taking effect in January. Changes are likely before any vote. A residential customer who uses 1,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per month pays Georgia Power an average of $128 a month now, Chief Financial Officer Aaron Abramovitz said Friday. Under the plan, that would rise by $14.32 in 2023, reaching a total of $16.29 over the three-year period. But those aren't the only price increases Georgia Power's 2.3 million customers could face next year. The Public Service Commission has already approved plans for the company to increase rates by $3.78 a month as soon as the first of two new … [Read more...] about Georgia Power proposes 12% increase in bills, with 2023 leap
Inflation Hits New 40-Year High As Price Increases Spread
16 Business Report underscores fears inflation has spread beyond energy and goods, whose prices are driven up by supply chain issues and Ukraine war. Associated Press , News Partner Posted Replies WASHINGTON — The prices of gas, food and most other goods and services jumped in May, raising inflation to a new four-decade high and giving American households no respite from rising costs. Consumer prices surged 8.6 percent last month from a year earlier, faster than April's year-over-year increase of 8.3 percent, the Labor Department said Friday. The new inflation figure, the highest since 1981, will heighten pressure on the Federal Reserve to continue raising interest rates aggressively. On a month-to-month basis, prices jumped 1 percent from April to May, much faster than the 0.3 percent increase from March to April. Contributing to that surge were much higher prices for everything from airline tickets to restaurant meals to new and … [Read more...] about Inflation Hits New 40-Year High As Price Increases Spread
