UN Launches Probe on Philippines Drug War Deaths
The United Nations Human Rights Council has voted to launch an investigation into the alleged killings of tens of thousands of Filipinos during the government's war on drugs. The measure, put forward by Iceland, was approved 18-14 Thursday. It cites extrajudicial killings, arbitrary arrests and disappearances at the hands of police since President Rodrigo Duterte launched the anti-narcotics campaign in 2016. Philippines ambassador in Geneva, Evan Garcia, immediately rebuked the U.N. move saying it "does not represent a triumph of human rights, but a travesty of them.'' Filipino activists have claimed that about 27,000 people have been killed as police terrorize poor communities, using cursory drug "watch lists" to identify users or dealers. The government counters that about 6,600 people have been killed by police in shootouts with drug dealers. The resolution was welcomed by human rights groups. The Gifts Our Senior Editor Is Contemplating for Her Anniversary
Every month, we Strategist editors tell you about the best things we’ve recently bought for ourselves. But what about the things we wish other people would buy for us? It’s a ritual for us to share our holiday wish lists , but during the rest of the year we’re also having birthdays, housewarming parties, weddings , babies , and more. So now we’re spilling about the gifts we’d like for those milestones, as well. This time: senior editor Margaret Rhodes on anniversary gifts. The only person I know who’s pickier than a Strat editor is the one with whom I’m celebrating a three-year anniversary. The man will drink Yuengling out of a faded wedding koozie, but to shop with him is to analyze details most of us pass over — the way thread loops through a button, or the shade of rubber on the sole of a Vans shoe . I won’t even buy a houseplant without consulting him, so in honor of our anniversary — something that’s a mutual celebration, anyway — any … [Read more...] about The Gifts Our Senior Editor Is Contemplating for Her Anniversary
Jasmine Harrison delights in Atlantic Ocean world record row
(CNN) When your phone goes off in the middle of the night, it isn't usually good news. At best, it signals a call into action, albeit with a foggy head and a scrambled mind. At worst, the incessant ringing or buzzing represents news of a dreadful event, or an impending one. As the British rower Jasmine Harrison discovered, being woken up at 4 a.m. -- when you're all alone in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean -- is a harbinger of all of the above. "Oh my God," Harrison declared on a video recording that she made of the incident, "I'm actually shaking. This is as scary as anything!" Read More She was roughly halfway through a daring solo adventure -- rowing across the Atlantic -- when she realized that she was teetering on the brink of total calamity. Her tiny 550-pound (249 kilograms) rowing boat was on a collision course with a drilling ship, which could easily have swatted her asunder without ever knowing that she was there. Recalling the incident … [Read more...] about Jasmine Harrison delights in Atlantic Ocean world record row
