Google Bans 200 Publishers Partly Due To ‘Fake News’ Policy
Google booted 200 publishers from its advertising network partly due to the outcry of fake news spreading throughout the Internet. Google announced Wednesday that it reviewed 550 sites in roughly two months, and took action against 340 of them for violating policies. Two-hundred publishers were kicked out of its network permanently. It is common practice for Google to continuously filter out marketers that make fraudulent or misleading claims — like “weight-loss scams,” “imitation designer watches” — but certain sites that potentially publish dishonest information are now on the chopping block. “In 2016, we saw the rise of tabloid cloakers , a new type of scammer that tries to game our system by pretending to be news,” Scott Spencer, the director of product management at Sustainable Ads, wrote in an official blog post (emphasis theirs). “Cloakers often take advantage of timely topics—a government election, a trending news story or a popular celebrity—and their ads can look … [Read more...] about Google Bans 200 Publishers Partly Due To ‘Fake News’ Policy
NBA Yet to Respond After Chinese Court Rules Homosexuality a Mental Disorder
The National Basketball League has yet to comment after a Chinese court ruled that homosexuality is a “psychological disorder.” Recently a court in the eastern Chinese province of Jiangsu ruled that being gay is a disorder and cited Chinese academic research to justify the position. This ruling by the Jiangsu court’s rule upholds a lower court’s ruling, the New York Post reported. LGBTQ activists in China have slammed the rulings calling them “random and baseless.” “The editor of the textbook apparently used viewpoints that do not match society’s perception of sexual minorities today,” said Ah Qiang, a spokesperson for PFLAG in China. The ruling seems to run contrary to the 1997 decriminalization of homosexuality in China, not to mention the 2001 removal of homosexuality from China’s official lists of mental disorders. Still, the NBA remains silent on the ruling made by their multibillion-dollar partners in the Chinese government, despite their claims to be staunch … [Read more...] about NBA Yet to Respond After Chinese Court Rules Homosexuality a Mental Disorder
College Professor Claims ESPN Analyst Verbally ‘Violated’ Her
ESPN college basketball analyst and radio host Dan Dakich is being investigated after a professor at Ursinus College in Pennsylvania said she felt “violated” after Dakich used the word “bitching” during a Twitter squabble. In February, a lecturing fellow from Duke University named Nathan Kalman-Lamb blasted Dakich and other members of the sports media after they criticized freshman basketball player Jalen Johnson for opting out of the final six games of the season. Dakich and others implied that Johnson had quit on his team. That criticism resulted in a Twitter spat involving Dakich, Kalman-Lamb, and assistant professor Johanna Mellis. After Dakich challenged the sports/athletic credentials of Mellis and Kalman-Lamb, Mellis, a former D1 swimmer, challenged the ESPN personality to a swimming race. “Dakich later used the word ‘bitching’ in reference to Mellis and tweeted that he would have to divorce his wife first before accepting her challenge,” the New York Post reports … [Read more...] about College Professor Claims ESPN Analyst Verbally ‘Violated’ Her
