How much wealth the government should redistribute has divided us as a nation.According to the Tax Policy Center, 45 percent of Americans pay no federal income tax. The remaining 55 percent carry the load of buying food for one in eight of their fellow Americans. The 55 percent is asked to spend more than $70 billion a year on free food for others. This does not include the more than $16 billion for free school lunches or the $2 billion spent on the WIC program providing free food to women with infants and children. They say there’s no free lunch? Of the states, Louisiana has the second-highest percentage of people on food stamps.Federal law currently limits those on food stamps to three months of benefits within a three-year period unless they work at least 20 hours per week, are looking for work, or are getting job training. Greg Hilburn Monroe News Star Published 12:20 PM EST Dec 11, 2018 Congress has reached a compromise deal on a new Farm Bill to set agriculture policy for five years, but it won't expand work requirements for food stamps, which had been a priority of Louisiana Congressman Ralph Abraham and President Donald Trump. The House and Senate are likely to vote on the bill this week. Abraham, R-Alto, whose family farms in northeastern Louisiana, is the state's only member of the House Agriculture Committee and was a member of the conference committee that crafted the final version. "This gives our farmers and ranchers the security they need," said Abraham, who announced last week he is running for governor in 2019. "It preserves crop insurance and provides more flexibility for farmers moving forward." But the bill doesn't expand work requirements for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, better known as food stamps. Work requirements are technically in … [Read more...] about Farm Bill deal reached without food stamp work requirement expansion
Greg Hilburn Monroe News Star Published 3:47 p.m. UTC Sep 6, 2018 Louisiana Congressman Ralph Abraham is pushing his colleagues on the Farm Bill Conference Committee to include work requirements for food stamp recipients, the last major sticking point on passage. "We're simply asking these adults to meet the taxpayer halfway," said Abraham, R-Alto, the only member of the state's delegation on the panel negotiating the final version of the Farm Bill. The Farm Bill sets agriculture policy for five years. Senators are resisting the work requirements related to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program commonly known as food stamps. "We're very close on every issue except except SNAP reform," said Abraham, who emphasized the work requirements and other priorities while addressing the committee in a public hearing … [Read more...] about Abraham pushes food stamp work requirements in Farm Bill

She noted that this was less than the SNAP benefit for a family of four in her home state of North Carolina. Read more about her experiment here.
