(AP) — Some Florida schools have moved library books and debated changing textbooks in response to a law critics call “Don’t Say Gay” — and some teachers have worried that family pictures on their desks could get them in trouble. As students return from summer break, educators are cautiously adjusting and waiting to see how the new law governing lessons on gender and sexual orientation will be interpreted and enforced. The new law, championed by Florida’s GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis, bans lessons on sexual orientation and gender identity in kindergarten through third grade as well as material that is not deemed age-appropriate. Most educators do not expect a major change in lesson plans — one of the key reasons critics cited in saying the law was unnecessary was that teachers do not cover such subjects in early grades anyway. But some worry it sets a tone … [Read more...] about ‘Don’t Say Gay’ law confuses some Florida schools

Florida utility’s new drone can speed hurricane recovery
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Florida’s primary energy provider is ready to launch a powerful new technology, just ahead of the busiest weeks of the Atlantic hurricane season: a new fixed-wing drone designed fly into tropical storm force winds and speed the restoration of electricity after severe weather. FPLAir One resembles a small plane and is remotely operated, enabling the utility to capture and deliver images and video of damaged electrical equipment in real time to its command center. It can fly up to 1000 miles (1600 kilometers) at a time — enough to cover the length of Florida twice in the immediate wake of the most damaging storms. It's a vast improvement on bucket trucks and hand-held drones when it comes to learning what a storm did at the top of a power pole. “Rather than going out and try to figure out what’s going on, we’re able to save hours and days on getting the lights on,” Florida Power and Light Chairman and CEO Eric Silagy told The Associated Press. Trump Tells Fox News He’ll ‘Do Whatever’ He Can to Tame Fire He Lit
Former President Donald Trump essentially became the living embodiment of the “ we’re all trying to find the guy that did this ” meme on Monday morning, telling Fox News he “ will do whatever ” he can to “help the country” because the “temperature has to be brought down” following the FBI’s raid of his Florida residence. In the days following the FBI’s execution of a search warrant to seize classified documents from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, agents have been inundated with a flurry of death threats and MAGA supporters have openly called for civil war and acts of domestic terrorism. In fact, one such Trump superfan angry over the raid died in a police shootout after attempting to attack an FBI office in Cincinnati. Trump and his allies, meanwhile, have reacted to the search and seizure of the ex-president’s home by flooding the zone with increasingly unhinged attacks on law enforcement and fanciful defenses of Trump’s actions. With the search warrant revealing that the … [Read more...] about Trump Tells Fox News He’ll ‘Do Whatever’ He Can to Tame Fire He Lit
Florida gator hunting starts with expanded time, weapons
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Florida's alligator hunting season started Monday with new rules expanding the time and weapons that can be used. The new rules expanded alligator hunting to 24 hours a day, instead of the previous 17 hours a day, primarily at night and early morning, that had been allowed. Additionally, hunters now will be allowed to use pneumatic air-bows attached to a restraining line to hunt the alligators. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says the pneumatic air-bows are easier to use for people with mobility challenges and young people. Hunters already could use bows, crossbows, harpoons, spears and pneumatic air-guns firing an arrow. Florida is estimated to have 1.3 million alligators. … [Read more...] about Florida gator hunting starts with expanded time, weapons
‘Fox & Friends’ Begs Trump to Make Supporters Lay Off FBI
FBI agents have been inundated with an unprecedented avalanche of threats after the bureau’s search of Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home last week—which the former president was quick to brand a politically-motivated “witch-hunt.” With rhetoric of civil war and armed rebellion against federal law enforcement spreading online like wildfire, Fox & Friends decided it was time to turn down the temperature Monday. “So many supporters of Donald Trump have used this opportunity to go against the FBI,” host Steve Doocy said. “They’re barking up the wrong tree. Don’t blame the FBI.” After authorities seized classified documents from Trump’s Florida mansion last week, the former president could face potential prosecution under the Espionage Act. Some of the documents may even pertain to nuclear weapons, according to reports. But instead of being appalled by the fact that there’s even a remote possibility that a former president’s actions could warrant such an investigation, … [Read more...] about ‘Fox & Friends’ Begs Trump to Make Supporters Lay Off FBI
