By Stephen Nellis(Reuters) - The latest round of U.S. tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese goods could hit the Apple Watch, health trackers, streaming music speakers and other accessories assembled in China, government rulings on tariffs show. The rulings name Apple Inc's <AAPL.O> watch, several Fitbit Inc <FIT.N> activity trackers and connected speakers from Sonos Inc. While consumer technology's biggest sellers such as mobile phones and laptops so far have faced little danger of import duties, the rulings show that gadget makers are unlikely to be spared altogether and may have to consider price hikes on products that millions of consumers use every day.The devices have all been determined by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officials to fall under an obscure subheading of data transmission machines in the sprawling list of U.S. tariff codes. And that particular subheading is included in the more than 6,000 such codes in President Donald Trump's most recent round of proposed … [Read more...] about Apple Watch, FitBit could feel cost of U.S. tariffs

(Credit: Reuters) Apple has only offered a rectangular Apple Watch design since the wearable first launched in 2015. But a new patent from the company suggests it's at least thinking about other options. Apple was recently awarded a patent by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) that relates to a circular Apple Watch design. The patent, called "electronic device having display with curved edges," discusses how information would be displayed and presented on a device with a round screen. Specifically, Apple says that the way for displaying content on a circular display instead of a rectangular option is different. And with help from curved edges, it believes it can address that problem. "Pixel arrays often have rectangular shapes," the patent reads. "However, rectangular pixel arrays will not fit efficiently within a device having a circular shape. Circular displays can have bottleneck regions in which signal lines become crowded, leading to … [Read more...] about Round Apple Watch could be on the way
In the battle of the fitness wearables, did Fitbit or Apple Watch win the Christmas consumer wars? The companies are not releasing sales figures, so it's impossible to know for sure. But anyone who thought Apple Watch would make Fitbit obsolete was clearly mistaken: the fitness tracker saw its iOS app shoot up 20 spots on the "free apps" list at Apple's App Store after the holiday. The boost in app downloads indicates that many people were buying or receiving new Fitbit wristbands, which is the overall market leader in fitness tracking devices, Quartz reports. Fitbit currently has a wide range of fitness tracking options available. For instance, the Fitbit Surge counts users' steps, sleep times, and heart rates, while also containing a GPS tracker and the ability to receive text notifications. The Fitbit Charge is cheaper -- $100 less -- stripping the device of its "smart" features and instead focusing on basic health tracking. How Apple Watch fared during the Christmas shopping season … [Read more...] about CBS News Logo Fitbit vs. Apple Watch: Who won Christmas?

HTC Vive Virtual reality is a huge trend at CES this year, and the HTC Vive headset is one of the items leading the pack. Like the Oculus Rift and other VR devices, it immerses the user in a 3D video experience. But what distinguishes the HTC Vive is that it has a built-in camera in the front. When the new Fitbit Blaze was introduced at CES 2016 in Las Vegas Tuesday, the fitness tracking watch might have looked a little familiar. The wearable's sleek new design reminded a lot of tech insiders of the Apple Watch, at least on the outside. The Fitbit Blaze, priced at $199.95, comes in three colors -- black, blue, and plum -- and does everything the old Fitbit did, but with a new look and functionality. It has a colorful touch screen and consumers have the option to buy sleek leather bands or metal link bands and frames. In addition to carrying out its standard fitness-tracking tasks, the watch can receive calendar alerts and text notifications. "The Blaze uses your phone's connection to track GPS for runs and to get buzzing notifications for incoming calls, texts, and calendar appointments. But that's it: this won't be full of Facebook messages or have separate apps" like an Apple Watch, noted the CNET review. First impressions of the device drew some mixed responses across … [Read more...] about CBS News Logo The new Fitbit Blaze looks a lot like Apple Watch

provided by Published 3:00 pm, Monday, March 5, 2018 Apple's smartwatch is the gadget of choice in the global market for wearable devices. The Apple Watch, first released in 2015, appears to be catching on with consumers and now dominates the nascent wearables market. Although Apple does not disclose sales figures of its Apple Watch, this chart by Statista, based on data from industry research firm IDC, shows that Apple took the top spot in 2017. The addition of cellular connectivity to the new model of the Apple Watch, along with the struggles at Fitbit, the previous market leader, contributed to Apple's big year. If Apple can continue to grow its wearables business at the same rate in 2018, its lead is likely to get larger. When it came to her heart, Ramona Anderson was the picture of health. She was a vegan, never smoked and walked around her Coral Springs subdivision on a daily basis. One day that changed. It was April 2016, and 59-year-old Anderson started to feel pain in her chest. She took some pain medication and checked the health app on her Apple Watch. Her heart rate was skyrocketing even though she was sitting still. The data led her to the emergency room, where the retired attorney, now 61, learned she had had a heart attack. Around 30 million people have taken to the Apple Watch since Apple launched it in 2015. Nearly 61 million own FitBit trackers. Wearers can monitor their heart rate, count their steps and in cases like Anderson’s, potentially save their lives. Consumers aren’t the only ones taking to this technology. Exercise and healthy eating are the most effective ways to prevent heart disease, and doctors are increasingly using the wearable products to help patients lead … [Read more...] about Checking your heart rate through the Apple Watch and other devices
