Survey: 63% of Americans Want Popular Vote to Decide Presidential Election
The majority of Americans would rather a national popular vote total decide presidential elections than the Electoral College vote totals, a survey from the think tank Pew Research Center has found. The survey sampled more than 6,000 Americans, discovering that 63 percent would prefer presidential elections be decided by the national popular vote. Conversely, just 35 percent of respondents favored keeping “the current system, in which the candidate who wins the most votes in the Electoral College wins the election,” the survey found. The gap between pro and anti-Electoral College Americans has grown since last year. In January 2021, Pew Research found that 55 percent of Americans preferred moving towards a popular vote system, as opposed to 43 percent who still favored Electoral College vote totals deciding the president. After the 2000 and 2016 elections, where Republican Presidents George W. Bush and Donald Trump both won the presidency but lost the popular vote, the … [Read more...] about Survey: 63% of Americans Want Popular Vote to Decide Presidential Election

Single-use plastic waste is getting phased out in California under a sweeping new law
(CNN) In an attempt to slash the wide-ranging impacts of plastic pollution , California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law the country's most sweeping restrictions on single-use plastics and packaging on Thursday, the same day the Supreme Court limited the Environmental Protection Agency's ability to tackle the worsening climate crisis. The law requires that single-use packaging and plastic single-use food serviceware be recyclable or compostable by 2032. It also requires by 2032 a 25% reduction in the sales of plastic packaging and for 65% of all single-use plastic packaging to be recycled. And it establishes an accountability group, which will include industry representatives, to run a new recycling program overseen by the state. "Our kids deserve a future free of plastic waste and all its dangerous impacts, everything from clogging our oceans to killing animals — contaminating the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat," Newsom, a Democrat, said in a … [Read more...] about Single-use plastic waste is getting phased out in California under a sweeping new law
‘Five Days at Memorial’ takes a grim look back at Hurricane Katrina’s tragic toll
(CNN) A grim reminder of the catastrophic institutional failures associated with Hurricane Katrina, "Five Days at Memorial" captures the personal toll and terrible choices made under the most adverse of conditions. Working backward from the 45 dead bodies discovered in Memorial Hospital, it's a compelling fact-based look at those five days as well as their aftermath . Indeed, the title notwithstanding, "Five Days" (which devotes each of the opening installments to a different day) actually encompasses eight parts, a metaphor for the way streaming series deal with time if there ever was one. Here, though, the extra chapters necessarily deal with the fallout from what transpired, shifting from the doctors -- forced into choices about leaving patients behind, and horrifyingly, euthanizing them -- to those investigating what happened (played by Michael Gaston and Molly Hager), where the blame lies and the related politics surrounding it. Based on Pulitzer … [Read more...] about ‘Five Days at Memorial’ takes a grim look back at Hurricane Katrina’s tragic toll
