The weekly College Football Playoff rankings will be released Tuesday night, and it wouldn’t surprise me if the Sooners fall from sixth. I had OU eighth in my rankings last week, and winning Bedlam at home doesn’t pad the old resume’.Plus, there’s the eye factor, which I don’t consider but the committee does, and the eye factor isn’t in the Sooners’ favor, needing a 2-point conversion stop to win 48-47 over Oklahoma State. The rankings could be interesting, though. Just in my rankings, I moved up Clemson from sixth to third this week. Clemson’s win at Boston College was impressive. The differences between Clemson, Georgia and Michigan are not great, and a little variance in the schedule can make a difference. For example, the Wolverines beat Rutgers last week. That drags down Michigan, while Georgia beat Auburn.Remember, I rank teams based on who they played, where they played and how they did. My rankings, much like the … [Read more...] about College football rankings: Alabama, Notre Dame 1-2

Ross D. Franklin, Associated Press Washington coach Chris Peterson, left, talks with quarterback Jake Browning (3) during the first half of an NCAA college football game against Arizona State on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2017, in Tempe, Ariz. Related Link History shows BYU needs to rely on more than one quarterback to survive a season BYU, Utah and Utah State are all facing tough teams this fall. While the Aggies, Cougars and Utes aren't exactly getting much attention as national writers put out their preseason rankings, several of their opponents are. That means all of our local teams will at least have a chance of improving their resumes by beating some of these preseason top 25 teams. Texas State coach Everett Withers was blunt when he first took over the Texas State football program.“No one on this team is making excuses, because they know that we aren’t going to listen to them,” Withers told the Austin-American Statesman in 2015 shortly after he was hired. “The fact that you have to go and compete every time you step on the field is something we’ve pushed hard this spring. Are we a good football team? We are not even close.”Withers has recruited aggressively and finally has close to a fully stocked roster entering his third season, but lack of experience and a tough schedule will likely put a bowl out of reach this year.Texas State is near the bottom of Orlando Sentinel college insider Matt Murschel preseason 2018 college football rankings. Murschel ranked all 129 Football Bowl Subdivision teams in the country. The Sentinel staff takes a closer look at a new team daily, counting backward from No. 129 to our projected No. 1 … [Read more...] about Despite modest improvement, Texas State is No. 128 in 2018 preseason college football rankings
(Associated Press) CBSSports.com columnist Jon Solomon on Friday morning published a ranking of the 18 BCS- and playoff-era champions, based on votes cast by a handful of college football writers around the country. The rankings, with vote totals, stats and Solomon’s summary, can be found here. I was fortunate enough to participate and wanted to share my ballot, which tracks the overall voting fairly closely with the exceptions of Oklahoma ’00 and Florida State ’13 (as you’ll see below). Note I: The comments below are mine, written for this Hotline post. They were not submitted. Note II: I’d argue that USC ’03 was as good as half the teams on this list, but the Trojans weren’t the BCS champs. They were AP champs, denied a spot in the title game due to the BCS formula, which deemed LSU and Oklahoma the best teams. 18. LSU ’07 (CBSSports ranking: 18): Not the least-talented of the champs, but the only one with two losses (to Kentucky … [Read more...] about College football: Rankings the champs of the BCS/playoff era
