Republican Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts declared on Sunday morning that he wants his state to pass a law banning all abortion with no exceptions for incest or rape, stating that it’s his “intention” to call a special legislative session to take “further steps” to “protect preborn babies.” Abortion rights have suddenly emerged as one of the top election issues heading into the midterms, following this month’s leaked Supreme Court draft opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade . The opinion, written by Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, would not only uphold Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban but would also strike down the federal right to abortion. Currently, 13 states have so-called “trigger laws” on the books that would immediately and effectively outlaw abortion once Roe v. Wade is reversed. Nebraska, however, is not one of these states as their attempt—which would have provided no exceptions in cases of rape or incest—was blocked by a legislative filibuster last month . … [Read more...] about Nebraska Guv Wants No Rape or Incest Exception for Abortion: ‘They’re Still Babies’

Buffalo massacre further rattles an insecure nation
(CNN) This weekend's massacre in Buffalo is the most terrifying proof yet of a grave threat from a wave of White supremacist terrorism -- a seething, hateful ideology that festers online and is adding a new layer of fear to a dangerous, divisive age. The killing of 10 innocent people at a grocery store, allegedly targeted in a largely Black neighborhood by an 18-year-old apparently steeped in the racist White replacement theory , is horrific enough as one of America's all too common mass gun rampages, of which there were several this weekend alone. But details emerging about the depraved racial motivations of the Buffalo suspect are the latest sign that the country's poisoned politics are not just unable to prevent such evil and the seemingly endless carnage caused by gun violence. They are actively making the situation worse, creating an atmosphere in which Black Americans were gunned down while doing their Saturday shopping. … [Read more...] about Buffalo massacre further rattles an insecure nation
Fetterman Shears Lamb, Wins PA Democratic Senate Nomination
Lt. Gov. John Fetterman won Pennsylvania’s Democratic Senate primary Tuesday night, defeating Rep. Conor Lamb and state Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta ending a lengthy intra-party battle, according to the Associated Press. Fetterman, who’s been considered the race’s frontrunner for weeks, will now face the Republican nominee , who has not yet been called, in November. He won despite a sudden health scare this past weekend. On Sunday, Fetterman announced he’d suffered a stroke, was hospitalized and “feeling much better” with no cognitive damage, according to a statement Sunday. “Our campaign isn’t slowing down one bit, and we are still on track to win this primary on Tuesday, and flip this Senate seat in November,” he wrote in a statement. On Tuesday, just hours before the election, he underwent surgery for implantation of a pacemaker with a defibrillator. Pennsylvania is expected to be one of the most expensive Senate races nationwide this year as Democrats hope to flip … [Read more...] about Fetterman Shears Lamb, Wins PA Democratic Senate Nomination
Cargo Shorts Enthusiast John Fetterman Wins Democratic Senate Race
Photo-Illustration: Intelligencer; Photos: Getty Images Democrats’ hopes for the Senate now largely ride on a candidate more comfortable in cargo shorts and a hoodie than a suit. John Fetterman , the colorful lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania, won the Democratic primary Tuesday days after suffering a stroke. It was not immediately clear who Fetterman will face in the general election with the Republican senate-primary contest too close to call, but Democrats desperately need to take the seat held by Pat Toomey in order to maintain or expand their Senate majority in what will be a challenging year for the party. Fetterman, 52, is not scheduled to attend a victory party in Pittsburgh as he is recovering from the stroke he suffered last Friday. Hours before polls closed, it was announced he would undergo a surgical procedure to implant a pacemaker with a defibrillator in order to address atrial fibrillation that caused a blood clot leading to the stroke. He announced … [Read more...] about Cargo Shorts Enthusiast John Fetterman Wins Democratic Senate Race
Elected officials and thousands more call for national action at pro-choice rally
Last Saturday was a day of anger, action and community. Thousands met in Armory park to rally against the leaked Supreme Court decision on Roe v. Wade in a national day of action organized by Women’s March, Planned Parenthood and more. Prominent figures, including Tucson Mayor Regina Romero, spoke throughout the rally, which ran from 9 to 11 a.m. “As we gather here to protest a leak of a decision on Roe v. Wade from our Supreme Court, I am devastated, and I am pissed off, and I am not surprised,” Romero said at the opening of her speech. “I’m here as pissed off as you are to call you to action. No more.” Speakers like Romero urged people to take action through protest and voting for elected officials who will bring about change. They also challenged key arguments against legal abortion, starting with Dr. Cadey Harrel.
