The “United” bid, that will see 60 of the tournament’s games held in the U.S., with Canada and Mexico getting 10 each, beat out the underdog campaign of Morocco to bring soccer’s biggest show back to American soil. Nashville has been included among the candidates to host the World Cup following a bid by the Metro Sports Authority and the Nashville Convention & Visitors Corp to use Nissan Stadium. The U.S. previously hosted in 1994 and the potential for a highly lucrative tournament, plus the existing stadiums and infrastructure, likely played a major role in swaying voters. Portland Timbers fans will recognize two familiar faces when the 2018 FIFA World Cup kicks off Thursday. For the first time in club history, the Timbers will have players competing at a World Cup as David Guzman features for Costa Rica and Andy Polo represents Peru in Russia. And the Timbers aren't the only Major League Soccer club that will have players performing on the world stage. Even though the United States won't be competing at the World Cup after crashing out of qualifying last October, MLS will still be well represented in Russia this month.
