While children under 16 have not been approved to receive any of the currently available shots, clinical trials to get shots in little arms are underway. Delivering the vaccine to children will be necessary to tame the virus, experts say, and could remove uncertainty around when students will fully return to in-person learning as they already prepare for the upcoming fall 2021 school year. Here’s what we know so far about the vaccine and children. Drug companies have launched critical trials for younger children and their results are expected to be released to the public by the summer . Both Pfizer and Moderna are testing their two-dose vaccines in children as young as 6 months old. (Clinical trials in children require … [Read more...] about Shots in Little Arms: When Can Kids Get the Vaccine?
close Video Was Pausing Johnson & Johnson's Covid Vaccine a Good Idea? Paul Gigot interviews Dr. Marty Makary. The CDC is investigating a "handful" of potential additional cases of severe side effects involving the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine , the agency’s chief said Monday. Use of the single-dose COVID-19 vaccine was halted in the US last week amid reports that six women in the country developed dangerous blood clots — including one who died — after receiving the immunization. CORONAVIRUS: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW CDC chief Dr. Rochelle Walensky — asked at a White House press briefing if there were any more reports of "severe adverse effects" involving J&J doses in the US — replied, "There have been a handful of cases — not an overwhelming number of cases. "We’re going through and adjudicating them and verifying whether they do in fact reflect a true case," she said. Most Americans support the pause of Johnson & Johnson’s coronavirus vaccine, finding that it is “responsible,” according to an Axios-Ipsos poll released Tuesday . The poll comes after Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last week recommended the pause on the vaccine due to six cases of rare and severe blood clots combined with low blood platelets. A CDC advisory panel met last week to evaluate the data, but wanted time to gather more evidence on the risk of rare blood clots and its possible link to the vaccine. The decision kept the pause in place for the last week. ADVERTISEMENT The panel is expected to meet again on Friday. The survey, conducted April 16-19, found that 91 percent of Americans had heard of the pause on the vaccine. Of those who had heard of the vaccine, 88 percent said they believed the FDA and CDC were “being responsible” by recommending the pause. There was high … [Read more...] about Poll: Most support Johnson & Johnson vaccine pause as ‘responsible’
Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine is coming under further scrutiny by U.S. government health authorities. Dr. Rochelle Walensky, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said Monday the agency was looking into reports of additional cases of severe side effects possibly linked to the one-shot vaccine. Walensky told reporters during a White House news briefing the agency is “encouraged that it hasn’t been an overwhelming number of cases, but we are looking and seeing what’s come in.” The CDC and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) jointly called for a pause in the administration of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine last week after six women between the ages of 18 and 48 developed a rare but serious blood-clotting disorder following vaccination. One woman died and one was hospitalized in critical condition. The six women were among the 7 million Americans who have received the vaccine since its approval. The Johnson & Johnson … [Read more...] about Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 Vaccine Under Further Scrutiny in US
close Video CDC to meet to discuss J&J vaccine safety Harvard Global Health Institute director Dr. Ashish Jha provides insight on ‘Fox News Live.’ A European Union regulator has recommended that the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine should include a warning about unusual blood clots with low platelets. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) safety committee (PRAC) said the events should be listed as very rare side effects of the vaccine. However, the committee noted that "based on the currently available evidence, specific risk factors have not been confirmed." It also said that "the reported combination of blood clots and low blood platelets is very rare, and the overall benefits of COVID-19 Vaccine Janssen in preventing COVID-19 outweigh the risks of side effects." Johnson & Johnson had postponed its rollout of the vaccine in Europe after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and FDA flagged six instances of rare, … [Read more...] about EU regulator finds possible Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine, blood clot link
