A majority of adults, 59 percent, support waiting to reopen K-12 schools until all teachers who want a coronavirus vaccine have received a dose, according to a report from the Pew Research Center released on Wednesday. Forty percent of respondents to Pew's surveyed questions were in favor of reopening as soon as possible regardless of whether or not teachers who want the vaccine have received it. Eighty percent of Black adults, 69 percent of Hispanic adults and 72 percent of Asian American adults were in favor of waiting until teachers received vaccines, while results were more evenly split among whites with 51 percent in favor of waiting and 48 percent in favor of reopening as soon as possible. John Barrasso (R-WY) slammed the coronavirus relief proposal for how it handles school re-openings by stating that the money isn’t tied to re-opening, and 95% of the education money “won’t even start to be getting spent until 2022, when the pandemic is over. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued new guidance Friday stating that schools can reopen safely so long as certain precautions are in place. The CDC is recommending a return to in-person instruction outside of cases of very high community transmission rates, according to The Washington Post . The agency also said teachers do not need to be vaccinated in order for schools to reopen, although it recommended they still be placed in a higher priority group in states’ vaccination guidelines.
