MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Ahead of severe weather season, meteorologists want Minnesotans to plan ahead and know where to go and what to do when a storm hits. “We can hope for the best, but we should be planning for the worst,” said Douglas Hilderbrand, a meteorologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Hilderbrand says underground locations are the best for most severe weather locations. Basements are a good option for tornadoes, but if one is not available, he encourages people to shelter in an interior room without windows. The more walls between the person and the outdoors, the better. Mobile homes and manufactured homes are especially vulnerable to extreme weather such as high winds. Hilderbrand says to prepare for severe weather season and look into other, public spaces, like town centers or shopping districts with brick and concrete construction. Neighbors’ homes are also a good option. During a tornado warning, he says to bring along specific items … [Read more...] about Stay Prepared During Severe Weather Season With These Tips

By the end of the century, summer weather could last half a year (and that’s not a good thing)
(CNN) Summer weather could grow to half a year in length by the end of this century if no mitigation efforts are done on climate change, according to a new study . In about the past 60 years, summer has increased by 17 days on average across the globe. "Summers are getting longer and hotter while winters shorter and warmer due to global warming," said Yuping Guan, lead author of the study. Sure, longer summers may sound great for a family vacation or enjoying the outdoors, but this extended season could significantly impact our health, the environment and agriculture. Heat waves could grow longer, mosquito-borne illnesses could become more widespread, allergy season from pollen could turn more severe and the growing season of crops will be longer. Summers growing longer Read More The study reveals that warming temperatures globally are making the hottest quarter of the year, known as summer, longer, and this is also affecting when … [Read more...] about By the end of the century, summer weather could last half a year (and that’s not a good thing)
40% of Australia’s entire population under severe weather warnings covering an area the size of Alaska
Australian authorities issued fresh flood warnings and evacuation orders on Tuesday as torrential rains again pummeled several parts of the country, sweeping away homes , roads and livestock in the worst downpour in more than half a century. The national weather agency has posted severe weather warnings in every mainland state or territory but one, affecting about 10 million people in the country of 25 million, across an area the size of Alaska. "The rain and flood situation does remain dynamic and extremely complex," Prime Minister Scott Morrison told reporters. No deaths were reported, but thousands of people have been rescued by emergency services in recent days. About 18,000 people have been evacuated with authorities expecting about 15,000 others to join them. NOAA Announces Major Upgrades to US Weather Model
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced Monday it will be upgrading its Global Forecast System, one of the primary computer models used to predict weather across North America and the world. The update went live early Monday and is designed to predict more accurate forecasts as far out as two weeks into the future. NOAA says the update will lead to better predictions of hurricanes and other extreme weather events, ocean waves, and weather systems up high in the atmosphere. “This substantial upgrade to the GFS, along with ongoing upgrades to our supercomputing capacity, demonstrates our commitment to advancing weather forecasting to fulfill our mission of protecting life and property,” said Louis Uccellini, director of NOAA’s National Wether Service, in a media teleconference Monday. The upgrade focuses on underlying physics and adjusts how current weather information is inputted and processed by the model while integrating other sources of data from … [Read more...] about NOAA Announces Major Upgrades to US Weather Model
