Over 4% of the world’s imported crude oil flows through the Suez Canal — from the Middle East and Asia to Europe and the West, and from the North Sea to China. Almost 9% of refined oil products are shipped through the canal. This is the work of undergraduate students from the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University. With this facility, they will turn food waste from local restaurants and people into renewable energy and liquid plant fertilizer, which is used in community gardens, farms, and house plants.
