Spring Training Report: COVID Will Loom Over Baseball For Another Season
( CBS Baltimore ) — MLB has entered its second COVID spring training. Another COVID season isn’t far behind, and with any luck, this one will last 162 games rather than 60. While the pandemic has changed baseball, just as it’s changed everything else, the changes are now familiar. At the end of the day, it’s still baseball. And having games sure beats not having games. Welcome to the first installment of the Spring Training Report. Every Monday (or possibly Tuesday) we will take a look around the Majors at the stories making headlines. This week that includes the continuing or revised COVID restrictions, Trey Mancini’s return from cancer in Baltimore and Tommy Pham’s stabbing last October. The Athletes Have More to Say

Garrabrant/NBAE via Getty Images Of all the moments of the 2019–20 NBA season — the one with Rudy Gobert touching all the mics and the pandemic and the bubble and another Lakers championship — the most lasting one, the most important one, came when the Milwaukee Bucks, in the wake of the shooting of Jacob Blake by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin, elected unanimously not to play their playoff game against the Orlando Magic in order to call for justice for Blake and for the officers to “be held accountable.” It led to the postponement of two days worth of NBA playoff games, as well as games in Major League Baseball, the WNBA, and the MLS. It was something that had always been whispered about but not actually seen in sports in generations: Players recognizing the power of their voices — and simply refusing to play … [Read more...] about The Athletes Have More to Say
Report: NFL GMs Consider A Stephon Gilmore Trade To Be A ‘Foregone Conclusion’
BOSTON (CBS) — CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora broke down all of the big names who could be traded during this NFL offseason. Arguably the Patriots’ best player made the list. Thrown in the mix of several big names, La Canfora wrote that a trade of cornerback Stephon Gilmore seems to be a matter of “when,” not “if.” READ MORE: 'Gown Giveaway': Brides Across America Extends Wedding Dress Donations To Health Care Workers “Most GMs have considered it a foregone conclusion that the Patriots would trade top corner Stephon Gilmore this offseason and I haven’t heard anything about a contract extension, so a trade still seems like an eventuality,” La Canfora wrote. This is not exactly breaking news, of course. The Patriots and Gilmore reworked his deal last summer, taking $5 million from his 2021 salary and giving him that money a year early. By necessity, such a move would seemingly require either a restructure or a trade, as a player of Gilmore’s caliber won’t be playing the 2021 … [Read more...] about Report: NFL GMs Consider A Stephon Gilmore Trade To Be A ‘Foregone Conclusion’
Red Sox Use New Mercy Rule To Save Garrett Richards In First Inning Of Spring Training
By JIMMY GOLEN, AP Sports Writer Garrett Richards had gotten only one out during his first spring training start, loading the bases and walking in one run against the Atlanta Braves before the Red Sox stopped the inning after 23 pitches. READ MORE: Thousands Lose Power As Strong Winds Spread Damage Across Several Towns Then he went back out for a 1-2-3 second inning. “It’s building blocks, man,” Richards said after being rescued by the new rule this spring training that allows managers to end an inning after a pitcher has thrown 20 pitches, regardless of how many outs or runners on base there are. “Obviously, you want to finish it and you want to make all the outs that your outing requires,” he said. “So, yeah, it was a little frustrating.” Richards told reporters in Fort Myers, Florida, that his pitches were moving well, but he just struggled to keep them in the strike zone. He allowed two runs, three hits and two walks in the first inning before it ended. “By all … [Read more...] about Red Sox Use New Mercy Rule To Save Garrett Richards In First Inning Of Spring Training
