"The European Union (EU) deeply regrets the announcement by U.S. President Trump to withdraw from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)", High Representative Frederica Mogherini said in a statement Wednesday morning, calling it a "crucial" deal to avoid increasing the use of nuclear weapons. When Israel, India and Pakistan are already in possession of nuclear bombs, what is to prevent Iran from doing the same, irrespective of any temporary stopgap to postpone the inevitable. "We would prefer that the deal stick", he said.At the same time, the government said it has tasked the president of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran with "taking all necessary steps in preparation for Iran to pursue industrial-scale enrichment without any restrictions".President Donald Trump warned Iran of "very severe" consequences should the country restart nuclear activities that were halted as part of the 2015 accord he abandoned on Tuesday."I heard one of the primary industry representatives … [Read more...] about United States nuclear pullout to heighten conflict with Iran

Opinion Middle East Russia This article originally appeared on the Atlantic Council. Syria’s civil war has come close to provoking direct kinetic clashes between the United States and Russia. Yet, despite the urgency to understand both sides’ goals, hardly anyone is assessing Russia’s overall objectives in the Middle East. Syria might be the most urgent issue of what the late Zbigniew Brzezinski called the Eurasian Balkans, but it is not the sole issue or focus of Russia’s Middle East policy. We must urgently grasp the nature of Russia’s goals. Without understanding the facts on the ground, the United States will be unable to forge a coherent strategy or policies to implement any strategy for the Middle East.
