After missing out on the 2017 stock market rally, the energy sector is having a better 2018, and now several oil ETFs are providing some of the opportunities that eluded them last year. X First Trust Energy AlphaDEX (FXN) is trying to capitalize on the new trend with a portfolio of nearly 50 stocks in oilfield services, refinery, production, drilling and related companies. IBD's international oil exploration and production industry group — where four of the ETF's stocks reside — has climbed about 9% year to date. It's now in the top 20 of 197 industry groups. More than 20 of the companies in First Trust Energy AlphaDEX are part of IBD's U.S. exploration and production industry group, which is up about 8%. BlackRock (BLK) will shutter 16 exchange traded funds in smart-beta and multifactor strategies a few months after introducing a lineup of artificial intelligence-driven products. X The last day of trading for the funds will be Aug. 15, the company said in a statement Friday. The funds held about $91 million in assets at the end of May, according to the company. The closures come even as BlackRock puts greater emphasis on factor investing, a trading strategy that selects investments based on tested drivers of return, such as volatility, size and value. In April, the company introduced Factor Box, a tool that aims to "democratize" the strategy and illuminate it for more investors. BlackRock estimated that by 2022 the factor industry's assets under management will expand to $3.4 trillion from $1.9 trillion in 2017. Melissa Garville, a spokeswoman for BlackRock, declined to comment beyond the news release. Fidelity Investments has long been known for its top-performing portfolio managers like Peter Lynch of Fidelity Magellan Fund (FMAGX) and Will Danoff of Fidelity Contrafund (FCNTX). X But in recent years, the Boston-based fund giant has increasingly focused on building a name for itself in the universe of exchange traded funds. In 2003, it launched its first ETF, Fidelity Nasdaq Composite Index Tracking Stock Fund (ONEQ). Since Greg Friedman came on board in 2013 as head of ETF management and strategy, Fidelity has really beefed up its offerings. With its Thursday launch of two factor-based funds in the fixed-income space, Fidelity now has 10 factor ETFs in its lineup. It launched six domestic factor ETFs in September 2016 and added two international factor ETFs in January 2018.
