Bronx Students Receive Free Laptops For School; ‘Tens Of Thousands’ Still In Need, Borough President Says
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Almost one full year into the coronavirus pandemic, some students in New York City are still without computer access. Since the start of February, a foundation in the Bronx has been trying to make sure every student in the borough has one, CBS2’s Natalie Duddridge reported Monday. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on Monday ordered five e-cigarette firms to hand over sales and advertising data from 2019 and 2020 as the industry remains under fire for allegedly promoting and selling products to underage consumers. The commission voted 4-0 to require JUUL Labs, NJOY, R.J. Reynolds Vapor Company, Fontem U.S. and Logic Technology Development to provide the sales, advertising and promotional expense information to the government. The FTC noted in a statement that its “goal is to help the Commission, policymakers, and the public better understand this rapidly growing market.” ADVERTISEMENT The commission requested annual data on sales and giveaways, information about the characteristics of the companies’ e-cigarette products, such as the flavors, and annual spending on advertising and promotion. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is ordering the country’s largest e-cigarette manufacturers to turn over information related to their marketing and promotional practices, ratcheting up pressure on an industry that’s already under intense scrutiny from lawmakers and regulators. The agency sent orders to companies including Juul Labs, R.J. Reynolds Vapor Company, Fontem U.S. and NJOY after a 5-0 vote. The agency has conducted similar studies on cigarettes and smokeless tobacco products, and has the authority to compel companies to disclose information. ADVERTISEMENT The orders are different from a separate probe into whether Juul deliberately targeted its advertising efforts, including the use of paid “influencers,” to appeal to minors.
