March 22 will forever be seared into Boulder’s collective memory as the day 10 community members were killed by a gunman at the King Soopers in south Boulder. Now, with approval from Boulder City Council, the day will be known as the Boulder Day of Remembrance. Mayor Sam Weaver in the Council’s regular meeting on Tuesday read a declaration naming it such. “It has been said that there are three deaths: The first is when the body ceases to function. The second is when the body is returned to the earth. And the third is that moment, sometime in the future, when the person’s name is spoken for the very last time,” the declaration reads. By naming March 22 the Boulder Day of Remembrance, the city hopes that the third death will never happen, that every year the community will pause and remember the 10 people who died: Denny Stong, Neven Stanisic, Rikki Olds, Tralona Bartkowiak, Teri Leiker, Officer Eric Talley, Suzanne Fountain, Kevin Mahoney, Lynn Murray and Jody Waters. “As … [Read more...] about March 22 named Boulder Day of Remembrance

CO2 tax support is based in myth: Taxing essential energy harms more than it helps
Recent media reports lit up with news that the oil and gas industry has agreed to endorse a tax on carbon dioxide emissions. Several weeks ago, the American Petroleum Institute (API), one of the nation’s largest oil and gas trade associations, voted to support the tax as a replacement for current greenhouse gas regulations. Readers should realize that the API’s support for the carbon tax is based on at least four big myths. First, this support for the CO2 tax is based on the questionable notion that American society requires some regulatory motivation to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. It clearly doesn’t. Even under the Trump administration’s push for energy dominance, the U.S. reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emission s. Driven largely by electricity producers switching from coal to natural gas, but also magnified by last year’s COVID-19 lockdowns, the U.S. has reduced its CO2 emissions by 24 percent from 2005 levels . While GHG emissions are expected to increase slightly … [Read more...] about CO2 tax support is based in myth: Taxing essential energy harms more than it helps
The Chauvin trial is holding a mirror up to America’s insufficient police training
Cedric L. Alexander served some four decades in law enforcement and other areas of public service leadership. A CNN and MSNBC contributor, he is the author of "In Defense of Public Service: How 22 Million Government Workers Will Save Our Republic." The opinions expressed in this commentary are his own. View more opinion at CNN. (CNN) Most of the millions of people who have seen the awful video of the death of George Floyd under the knee of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin interpret that event as a murder. Under our democratic model of justice, validating this interpretation, even if it is held by millions, is difficult. It should be. It must be. An accused person is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. This is foundational to a free society, and our adversarial system of trial is intended to promote the sacred presumption of innocence. Cedric Alexander But reasonable doubt must never be exclusively the product of … [Read more...] about The Chauvin trial is holding a mirror up to America’s insufficient police training
Army officer sues police for pepper-spraying him, drawing guns during traffic stop
A U.S. Army officer has sued two Virginia police officers over a December incident caught on body camera footage in which the cops drew their guns and pepper-sprayed him. Caron Nazario, a second lieutenant in the Army, said in a lawsuit filed earlier this month that officers violated his constitutional rights during a traffic stop in the southeastern town of Windsor, located about 46 miles west of Virginia Beach. In the footage shared online by The Associated Press , Nazario, who is Black and Latino, can be seen dressed in his uniform and holding his hands up while sitting in his parked car at a gas station as the officers point their guns at him.
