Ed Rumley Paterson Press Published 3:48 PM EST Nov 30, 2018 PATERSON — After years of neglect, a small park created in tribute to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s 1968 visit to Paterson is getting what community leaders say is long-overdue attention from city officials. Seven trees were planted at the park Friday morning, kicking off a series of improvements that officials say also will include a rain garden. The park is located at the corner of Auburn and Governor streets, across from the church where King spoke in 1968, days before his assassination. “This is historical,” said area resident Angela Muhammad. “Just to remind everyone that Dr. Martin Luther King was here, we can reintroduce this rich legacy to the children of Paterson. This is helpful for the neighborhood. Now, we need activities here so people will pay homage at this place rather than destroy it.” 50 years ago: MLK’s speech in Paterson was one … [Read more...] about Paterson NJ strives to revive its Rev. As we approach the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.s’ assassination, it is important to reflect on his immense sacrifice to support the 1968 labor movement of the Sanitation Workers in Memphis, Tennessee, a movement culminated in the tragic death. The events leading to his death will stand as an indelible moment in history. I remember the story vividly, although I was a young boy at the time. I’ll never forget the night we heard of the assassination because it was the first time I saw my father cry openly. The assassination crippled Black American communities across the country. It was an event of the very worst nature. Our parents knew the impetus was racism, which they had also experienced. We shouldn’t forget that millions of Black Americans across the country had encountered racism; government-sponsored systemic discrimination, whether it is in our communities or in the workplace. The great divide between White and Black Americans remained prevalent … [Read more...] about The Union Lives! 50 Years after the Sacrifice of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 50
I must admit that one of the most misunderstood and misrepresented individual’s in American History is also one of the most popular; the person that I am alluding to is the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Now I am absolutely certain that many readers are questioning how is one of the most well known figure’s in American history ‘misunderstood and misrepresented’? If you are one of those who are questioning the validity of my statement that the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is ‘misunderstood and misrepresented’ you have made a typical error of associating an individual’s fame with the world understanding their message. The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is quite possibly the greatest victim one could find in regards to his true message, particularly the post-March on Washington period, not being heard by the masses of people, including those who proclaim to follow his teachings. Unfortunately for King, the most important aspects of his … [Read more...] about Unearthing the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
