Thursday night’s epic traffic jam on Golden Gate Bridge was due to lane closures that will run through 2021
Travelers who got stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic on the Golden Gate Bridge on Thursday night may want to prepare: Nighttime lane closures on the famous span will continue for three more years. The closures — which in some cases leave only one lane in each direction open — are required during the construction of the long-planned suicide barrier. But Thursday night’s closure caused especially bad traffic because it coincided with the end of a Doobie Brothers and Eagles concert at AT&T Park in San Francisco. Some travelers complained of the snarled traffic on social media, asking officials of the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District why it took more than hour to cross the bridge. If you’ve noticed a flood of ads on TV and social media for DNA test kits featuring smiling families gathered around a dinner table, you’re not alone. Consumer genetic testing companies like Burlingame’s Color Genomics and Mountain View’s 23andMe are trying their hand at Black Friday and Cyber Monday promotions, adopting marketing tactics of more traditional retailers and playing up a familiar theme that resonates with many during this time of year. “Thanksgiving and the holidays are all about families,” said Linda Jiang, head of consumer marketing at Color. “We think this creates an opening to start a dialogue about health and things that run in the family.” DNA testing has been making national and local headlines.
