Trump made 96 false claims over the last two weeks

· December 5, 2019 ·

Washington (CNN)It is not fun trying to catch up on fact checking President Donald Trump. We took a Thanksgiving break from our comprehensive counting of the President's false claims. We returned to find a hefty backlog of nonsense. Trump made 41 false claims last week, some of which he spent relaxing in Florida. He made 55 false claims the week before. The economy was the top subject of his dishonesty, with 27 false claims over the two weeks. Many of those economic claims related to his trade war with China; he made 18 false claims about China, 15 about trade (some of which were also about China) and 14 false claims about Ukraine. Trump scattered the dishonesty around multiple events and interviews. His worst showing: 23 false claims during a ranting 53-minute interview with Fox News morning show Fox & Friends. (Before we had time to do a deep dive, we reported it was at least 18 false claims.) Trump added another 15 false claims during his campaign rally in Sunrise, Florida and … [Read more...] about Trump made 96 false claims over the last two weeks

Is Melania Secretly the Smartest Trump?

· December 5, 2019 ·

The best anecdote I ever heard about a First Lady involved Laura Bush. Early in her relationship with George W. Bush, she was taken to his family’s compound in Maine, where Bush kin busied themselves with preppie jock activities like boating or tennis or touch football. “And what do you do, Laura?” asked Bush’s grandmother. “I read, I smoke, and I watch,” replied the retiring Laura. Laura Bush seems never to have cared much for the spotlight she was forced to share with her husband, but as the wife of a governor and then president, she gritted her teeth and did her best impersonation of a political wife. I interviewed her once, on the eve of the first national book fair, of which she was a sponsor (she had been one of the founders of the highly successful Texas book fair, and reading was truly a passion). In the few minutes I was allotted, I tried with no success whatsoever to get her off-script, to say anything spontaneous, but she had her talking … [Read more...] about Is Melania Secretly the Smartest Trump?

‘You Have to Treat ’Em like Shit’: Before Megyn Kelly, Trump Dumped Wine on a Female Reporter

· August 8, 2015 ·

Long before Donald Trump verbally attacked Megyn Kelly for doing her job, the billionaire physically went after a female journalist whom he hated. "She had blood coming out of her eyes. Or blood coming out of her wherever," Trump said of Kelly Friday night on CNN, a day after she noted at the Republican debate that Trump has called women “fat pigs, dogs, slobs, and disgusting animals.” (Trump has since said “wherever” was code for Kelly’s “nose.”) Not only does Trump behave toward women in degrading ways, he is proud to do so. Trump “boasts about having poured a whole bottle of wine down Marie Brenner’s back after she wrote a story on him that he hated,” New York magazine reported in 1992. “Well, it wasn’t a bottle, actually—it was a glass,” Brenner told The Daily Beast on Saturday. “I didn’t even notice it was happening, because like everything with Donald, it was a stealth maneuver. It … [Read more...] about ‘You Have to Treat ’Em like Shit’: Before Megyn Kelly, Trump Dumped Wine on a Female Reporter

Stacking the deck: Impeachment hearing spotlights anti-Trump professors

· December 4, 2019 ·

close Video Prof Karlan: Our national interest for Ukraine to fight Russians there so we don't fight here Professor Karlan says its in our national interest to protect our elections and make sure Ukraine remains strong to fight the Russians so we don't have to I didn’t expect much from the House Judiciary hearing, and I wasn’t disappointed. Democrats have already decided to impeach Donald Trump, and stacked the witness table with three professors who passionately insisted that the House has no choice. Only one professor said impeachment was absolutely not warranted. These are smart and learned academics, but the deck was obviously stacked. The committee’s top leaders set the tone Wednesday. BLOOMBERG, IN SINGLE DIGITS, NEEDS TO START MAKING NEWS, AND FAST Chairman Jerry Nadler declared that “never before in the history of the republic” has “the president engaged in a course of conduct that included all of the acts that most … [Read more...] about Stacking the deck: Impeachment hearing spotlights anti-Trump professors

Rep. Duncan Hunter pleads guilty to charge of misusing campaign funds

· December 3, 2019 ·

SAN DIEGO - Rep. Duncan Hunter pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of misusing campaign funds after denying for more than a year that he and his wife had tapped a quarter of a million dollars in campaign money to pay for personal expenses. Hunter, R-Calif., entered the plea on conspiring to misuse the funds - one of the four charges - in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California. He will be sentenced March 17 and faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. "I failed to monitor and account for my campaign spending. I made mistakes," he said. He declined to answer reporters' questions. The guilty plea is an ignominious event for the six-term congressman and retired Marine who was elected in 2008 to a seat his father, Duncan Hunter, held for 28 years. It was not immediately clear whether the younger Hunter would resign from his seat. The proceedings took less than 10 minutes as Hunter, flanked by his attorney, faced the judge. His father sat behind … [Read more...] about Rep. Duncan Hunter pleads guilty to charge of misusing campaign funds
