“Why did we bother to lie?” An interesting question, not often asked, despite the Trump era being a Golden Age of Deception, a veritable Liapalooza, with the president telling a dozen fibs a day, or more. Lying so predictably that before his address to the nation Tuesday, dramatizing his demand for $5.7 billion for a border wall, the networks struggled to form a plan to address the rain of falsehoods certain to come. Fact checkers were standing by to refute the lies before they were uttered, the way that color commentators are in place to describe the action sure to unfold on a football field. But is this the only way lying can be handled? The media, with its dumb ox tendency to strain forward, plowing the rut it always plows, has for years kept careful track of each presidential untruth, counting them, tallying them up, as if points will be awarded at the end. “Why did we bother to lie?” While keeping score, the process of lying, itself, its utility, is rarely … [Read more...] about We know Donald Trump lies a lot, but why?

Donald Trump Jr. urges Pennsylvania GOP to support midterm elections
Saturday September 22, 2018 12:29 AM He said Republicans have to be engaged the way they were in 2016. Written by Beth Brelje HERSHEY - President Donald Trump has been caught in a lie, his son, Donald Trump Jr., said while speaking at the Republican Party of Pennsylvania Fall Dinner on Friday at the Hershey Lodge. "If there is one thing that President Donald Trump lied to you about, it's that you would be sick of winning. I'm not sick of winning yet," Trump said to the nearly 700 people at the dinner in Dauphin County. Lines like that got laughs and applause from the supportive audience. Trump, the keynote speaker, arrived with his girlfriend, former FOX news anchor Kimberly Guilfoyle, and the dinner attendees gave them the celebrity treatment, whipping out their cellphones to snap photos as they walked to the front of the room. Guilfoyle and then Trump spoke. Trump said people often tell him they can't wait to vote for his father again in 2020, but he said the 2018 election … [Read more...] about Donald Trump Jr. urges Pennsylvania GOP to support midterm elections
President Donald Trump lies to everyone; his supporters lie to themselves
opinion EJ Montini Arizona Republic Published 12:18 p.m. UTC Jul 22, 2018 Is it journalism or silly nitpicking to point out that President Donald Trump has been lying lately about where his father was born? Last week I wrote a blog post pointing out that among Trump’s most recent lies is one in which he says his father was born in Germany. That isn’t true. I heard from readers about that post pretty quickly. For example, one supporter of the president wrote: “He ‘lied’ about his dad’s birthplace? That’s the best you got, Eddie? That’s not journalism. That’s desperation.” Actually, it’s journalism. Why little lies matter In fact, it’s vital journalism. It is vitally important to point out that the president of the United States is willing to tell a lie — more than once — that is so easily disproved. After his meeting with European Union leaders, Trump said in an interview with CBS News, … [Read more...] about President Donald Trump lies to everyone; his supporters lie to themselves

When ‘John Barron’ — aka Donald Trump — lied to me
By Robert Sansevere | [email protected] | PUBLISHED: May 1, 2018 at 7:23 am | UPDATED: May 1, 2018 at 7:31 am President Trump lied to me. He wasn’t president at the time, and he wasn’t using his real name when I interviewed him. He used an alias: John Barron. If that name sounds familiar, it has been in the news recently. Earlier this month, Jonathan Greenberg wrote in the Washington Post that, in 1984, while working as a researcher at Forbes magazine, he taped a phone conversation with Barron, who was attempting to get Trump moved up the list of the 400 richest people in America. And this past week, The New Yorker ran a story with the headline, “From John Barron to @RealDonaldTrump: Trump’s History of Lying.” Like with Greenberg, my chat with John Barron involved money. And as with The New Yorker story, our chat involved lying. As the sports editor in New Jersey for the Associated Press in the early 1980s, I covered the New Jersey Generals of the … [Read more...] about When ‘John Barron’ — aka Donald Trump — lied to me
