Mississippi will send back fed’s rental aid, even as housing needs remain high
In mere days, Mississippi will end its participation in the federal pandemic rental assistance program that has kept people facing eviction in their homes during the past two years of economic turbulence. The state still has $130 million in federal cash to run the program, but Gov. Tate Reeves , a Republican, said early this month that next Monday would be the last day to apply for assistance. Once Mississippi finishes processing the remaining claims, they will be returning the leftover money to the U.S. Treasury, which maintains oversight of the spending. The program's end comes as rental prices in Mississippi have skyrocketed and a large percentage of those behind on their rent or mortgage said they are at risk of losing their home in the next two months, according to U.S. Census data. The Rental Assistance for Mississippians Program, or RAMP, offered up to 15 months of rental and utility bill assistance for those in need. It was funded by two Covid-19 economic bills … [Read more...] about Mississippi will send back fed’s rental aid, even as housing needs remain high
Sinema took Wall Street money while killing tax on investors
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 8 WASHINGTON (AP) — Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, the Arizona Democrat who single-handedly thwarted her party’s longtime goal of raising taxes on wealthy investors, received nearly $1 million over the past year from private equity professionals, hedge fund managers and venture capitalists whose taxes would have increased under the plan. For years, Democrats have promised to raise taxes on such investors, who pay a significantly lower rate on their earnings than ordinary workers. But just as they closed in on that goal last week, Sinema forced a series of changes to her party’s $740 billion election-year spending package, eliminating a proposed “carried interest” tax increase on private equity earnings while securing a $35 billion exemption that will spare much of the industry from a separate tax increase other huge corporations now have to pay. The bill, with … [Read more...] about Sinema took Wall Street money while killing tax on investors

0 Real Estate California just expanded a pandemic program to help homeowners who fell behind on their payments. See if you qualify. Kristina Houck , Patch Staff Posted Reply SANTEE, CA — California expanded its mortgage relief program this month to offer support to those who are still falling behind on their payments as the COVID-19 pandemic drags on, officials announced. Most California families might be surprised to find out that they meet their county's income requirement for mortgage help. For example, a family of four in San Francisco could earn $279,600 and still be eligible for up to $80,000 in help. In Riverside County, the same family could earn $132,000 while in Orange County a family's household income could be as high as $203,250 to qualify. In San Diego County, for a household of five people, that area median income is $210,800. If an applicant's household income is at or below that amount, they may be eligible … [Read more...] about Even Wealthy Santee Homeowners Qualify For Mortgage Relief Now

Are We in a Recession or a Vibecession?
Illustration: Michael Houtz When we think about the economy, there’s a tendency to rush headfirst into the swirl of numbers moving up or down each month, plot them on angular charts, and spin out a story of what it all means. Inflation, unemployment, pay raises, gas prices — together, these indicators are supposed to jell into a coherent narrative and tell us where we’re going. The problem with the current economy is that the numbers don’t make any sense. Less than a month ago, some commentators were claiming we were already in a recession , thanks to two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth. Then the July jobs report hit, showing that the economy had added a staggering 528,000 jobs and that the unemployment rate hit a 53-year low. Prices are high, everything is expensive, and it’s sometimes impossible to find baby formula on the shelves — but for many workers, the pandemic economy has seen the balance of power shift in their favor with more people switching jobs … [Read more...] about Are We in a Recession or a Vibecession?
