What he does in the shadows. Photo: Sarah Silbiger/Bloomberg via Getty Images Less voluble, less gaffe-prone, more focused: In many ways, President Biden has been a very different political figure than the Joe Biden America has been familiar with for decades. I spoke with national correspondent Gabriel Debenedetti about Biden’s so-far successful communications strategy, and whether it can last. Ben : Our colleague Jonathan Chait wrote this of Joe Biden recently: “Biden’s advantage is that he’s not just nice; he’s also tedious. He is relentlessly enacting an ambitious domestic agenda … while arousing hardly any controversy. There’s nothing in Biden’s vanilla-ice-cream bromides for his critics to hook on to. Republicans can’t stop Biden because he is boring them to death.” This is true. It’s also true that, right now, many Republicans don’t even seem interested in going after Biden, or his policies. Instead, they’re focused on shoehorning whatever grievances they have … [Read more...] about Can Biden’s Low-Key Strategy Work Forever?
Lia Maria Sepe, age 7, attends online classes from her front yard, as her mother, Raquel, looks on. Photo: Brian Snyder/REUTERS Women more often do two things at once, sociologist Arlie Hochschild found in 1989. They “write checks and return phone calls, vacuum and keep an eye on the 3-year-old, fold laundry and think out the shopping list,” she wrote in The Second Shift . The tasks add up, and so does the stress. As Hochschild pursued her research, she arrived at an unfortunate conclusion. Mothers typically worked the equivalent of two jobs: one in public and another in the private domestic sphere of the home. She warned the gender revolution was potentially stalled. Now the gender revolution may no longer be stalled — it may be in reverse. Blame some backward momentum on the pandemic . Nearly 3 million women left the workforce in 2020, and only 1.5 million had returned by late April of this year. Schools closed, which forced children home and increased burdens on … [Read more...] about The Sexist Backlash to Universal Day Care
Former Fox News host Eboni K. Williams made her debut on Bravo’s The Real Housewives of New York on Tuesday, using the occasion to promote Black Lives Matter and the Central Park Five. During her introductory scene in Tuesday’s episode, Eboni K. Williams wore a mask featuring the words “Black Lives Matter” and an image of a raised fist. She also wore a sweatshirt featuring the names of the Central Park Five — the five men who were first accused then exonerated in the Central Park jogger rape case. In her first every scene for #RHONY , Eboni goes for a walk with Leah in Central Park while wearing a Black Lives Matter mask and a sweatshirt with the names of the Central Park Five on it. Yeah, I love this mask, but I hate this mask,” Williams replied. Williams is the first black cast member in the history of … [Read more...] about Former Fox News Host Eboni K. GENEVA — France joined the United States on Thursday in supporting an easing of patent and other protections on COVID-19 vaccines that could help poorer countries get more doses and speed the end of the pandemic. While the backing from two countries with major drug makers is important, many obstacles remain. The move to support waiving intellectual property protections on vaccines under World Trade Organization rules marked a dramatic shift for the United States — and drew cheers from activists, complaints from Big Pharma, and a lot of questions about what comes next. Washington had previously lined up with many other developed nations opposed to the idea floated by India and South Africa in October. Attention is now turning to those richer nations, notably in the European Union — and France was the first to voice its support. “I completely favor this opening up of the intellectual property,” French President Emmanuel Macron said Thursday on a visit to a vaccine center. But … [Read more...] about More support easing COVID-19 vaccine patent rules, but hurdles remain
