The number of new applications for unemployment insurance filed last week dipped slightly but remained well above historic averages, according to data released Thursday by the Labor Department. Weekly jobless claims totaled 793,000 during the first week of February, falling by 19,000 from the previous week’s revised total of 812,000 claims. The total number of weekly jobless claims filed in the final week of January was initially reported at 779,000, 33,500 fewer than the revised total. The small decline in last week’s claims and the major upward revision of the previous week’s total are the latest signs of how deeply the coronavirus pandemic has damaged the U.S. labor market. ADVERTISEMENT The U.S. added just 49,000 jobs in January as the unemployment rate declined to 6.3 percent. While the jobless rate has fallen substantially since rising to 14.7 percent in April 2020, the dramatic decline in labor force participation rate has made unemployment appear … [Read more...] about Weekly jobless claims dip slightly after major upward revision

CDC’s Walensky insists ‘we can’t let our guard down’ as average US virus cases dip
close Video Schools can reopen safely ‘without all of the teachers being vaccinated’: CDC director CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky tells ‘Fox News Sunday’ returning students to school requires a ‘layered mitigation approach.’ She also discusses the COVID-19 vaccine rollout and new variants of the disease. The United States saw average daily new coronavirus cases dip below 100,000 for the first time in months, but health officials cautioned that states looking to relax their health mandates may be acting too soon. Just Another Dip In The Celtics’ Roller Coaster Of A Season
By Matthew Geagan, CBS Boston BOSTON (CBS) — It’s just not worth getting frustrated by the Boston Celtics on a nightly basis. This season has been a true roller coaster of emotions, and that will likely continue the rest of the way. RELATED: Roche: A Few Reasons To Feel A Little Optimistic About The 2021 Red Sox As most have come to realize throughout the ups and downs and dips and loops of the first 28 games, the Celtics are just not a very good team. They’re pretty solid on some nights, they’ve shown some fleeting flashes of greatness on others, but they’ve been downright dreadful far too many times. In Wednesday night’s loss to the Atlanta Hawks, they were somewhere in between — not quite dreadful, but nowhere near good enough to beat an 11-win team. Most of that good juju from Tuesday night’s win over the Nuggets is now forgotten, as the Celtics dipped back to .500 on the season with a 122-111 loss to the Hawks. Where the Celtics let Nikola Jokic go off for 43 points in … [Read more...] about Just Another Dip In The Celtics’ Roller Coaster Of A Season
Consumer Sentiment Dipped in February and Inflation Expectations Climbed
Consumers were a bit less optimistic in February, data from the University of Michigan’s survey of consumer sentiment showed Friday. The index for consumer sentiment dipped to 76.8 from 79 in January. A midmonth reading, however, had sentiment at 76.2 and economists had forecast a reading of 76.4, so the actual results were better than expected. “Despite a small gain in late February, consumer sentiment was slightly lower for the entire month than in January,” said Richard Curtin, the survey’s chief economist. The dip in confidence came from households in the lower end of incomes, Curtin said. “All of February’s loss was due to households with incomes below $75,000, with the declines mainly concentrated in future economic prospects,” Curtin said. “The worst of the pandemic may be nearing its end, but few consumers anticipate the type of persistent and robust economic growth that restores employment conditions to the very positive pre-pandemic levels.” Consumers are … [Read more...] about Consumer Sentiment Dipped in February and Inflation Expectations Climbed
