McConnell Leads Secret Meeting Of Republican Senators In Ukraine
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell led a group of Senators through the streets of Kyiv, Ukraine, to meet with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian president announced in a video shared Saturday. “The visit of the U.S. Senate delegation led by the leader of the Republican minority in the upper house of Congress Mitchell McConnell is a strong signal of bipartisan support for Ukraine from the United States Congress and the American people,” Zelenskyy said on Telegram. Why the Brooklyn Democratic Party Is at War With Itself
Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn, the queen of Kings County, is under siege. Photo-Illustration: Intelligencer. Photo: Seth Wenig/AP/Shutterstock Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown, wrote Shakespeare. Not in Brooklyn. Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn, the first woman ever to lead the Kings County Democratic organization, comes across as fully at ease, comfortable in the eye of the storm, unapologetic about holding and using power, and eager to duke it out with the growing group of reformers trying to topple her. “All these people who just want to spend their time and days fighting on things that’s really not going to help the party — minuscule stuff just because they want power — that’s their agenda, but that’s not my agenda,” Hermelyn told me the day after several Brooklyn party officials called a press conference at Borough Hall to demand that she step down. “I was raised in real struggle [by] an immigrant Black woman, and right now I’m fighting for the lives of my people in my … [Read more...] about Why the Brooklyn Democratic Party Is at War With Itself
In US, states struggle to replace fossil fuel tax revenue
SANTA FE, N.M. — Government budgets are booming in New Mexico: Teacher salaries are up, residents can go to an in-state college tuition-free, moms will get medical care for a year after childbirth, and criminal justice initiatives are being funded to reduce urban violence. The reason behind the spending spree — oil. New Mexico is the No. 2 crude oil producer among U.S. states and the top recipient of U.S. disbursements for fossil fuel production on federal land. But a budget flush with petroleum cash has a side effect: It also puts the spotlight on how difficult it is to turn state rhetoric on tackling climate change into reality. State governments in the nation’s top regions for producing oil, natural gas and coal have by far the highest per-capita reliance on fossil fuels — led by Wyoming, North Dakota, Alaska and New Mexico. The revenue bankrolls essential public services, from highway maintenance to prisons. In Carlsbad, New Mexico, oil infrastructure property taxes are … [Read more...] about In US, states struggle to replace fossil fuel tax revenue
Julia Fox Is on a Bizarre Street Style Tear, and It Rocks
Julia Fox , the breakout star of Uncut Gems who also briefly appeared in the role of Kanye West’s girlfriend, has recently been taking to the streets dressed in barely-there looks that could only be described as extremely high-difficulty. On Sunday, Fox went on a grocery run in Hollywood clad only in a matching bra and underwear set, denim jacket and a purse constructed from a pair of jeans, all by scandal-hit designer Alexander Wang . There’s undeniable humor in this provocation, as though Fox is taking slouchy, just-running-errands outfits to their conceptual apotheosis, and daring the audience to question their ideas about which garments are appropriate for which context. The paparazzi moment also indicates just how much things have changed. If Britney Spears went shopping in her panties in 2007, she likely would have been thrown in the stocks, medieval-style. And Fox has been on a hot streak when it comes to avant-garde daywear: with the kind of unshakeable … [Read more...] about Julia Fox Is on a Bizarre Street Style Tear, and It Rocks
The War on Women and Children
A child and her mother wait in their car at a food distribution site in Florida. Photo: Paul Hennessy/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images The Bible is full of mystifying tales — whales swallow men, valleys fill with dry bones, water turns into wine — but on the subject of children, it is relatively clear. Far clearer, in fact, than it is on the subject of abortion. “Suffer the little children, and forbid them not to come unto me, for such is the kingdom of Heaven,” Jesus told the disciples. “Suffer” here implies a form of patience: He is telling the disciples to let children come to him in the name of spiritual well-being. But the word suffer has other meanings as well. Most commonly, it denotes pain. If the Christian right gets what it wants, a country without Roe v. Wade, the children will suffer indeed. With the Supreme Court poised to end the constitutional right to abortion , abortion won’t vanish from the country. Nor will the children produced appear … [Read more...] about The War on Women and Children
Steve Kozachik balances roles between UA and Tucson
Having two full-time jobs can be exhausting. Added responsibilities, additional commute, extra strain on family — all told, it can make pulling double duty nearly impossible. A normal person might be able to make it work for a while, but Steve Kozachik has made it work for nearly a decade. If the city’s August primary elections are any indicator, Kozachik should be on his way toward a decade of dual service as the Ward 6 Representative on Tucson’s City Council and an Associate Athletic Director at the University of Arizona, where he oversees facilities and capital projects. The rebel Since his election in 2009, Kozachik has been a mainstay in city politics. Although he identifies himself as liberal, his party allegiance has not always aligned with his politics. Honors complex inches forward
The University of Arizona and the City of Tucson continue to negotiate the terms of the proposed Honors College Community project north of the UA campus. At a City Council study session on September 19, the council voted to approve UA’s request that the city vacate and transfer city-owned Fremont Avenue between Mabel and Drachman streets. This was done so that the street could be incorporated into the Honors College Community in the event that the land does become state property and is not subject to city zoning. “It allows us to go forward with the idea that we’re designing the street to be closed,” said Peter Dourlein, assistant vice president for Planning, Design & Construction and Campus Architect for the UA. After studies performed by the UA, traffic and drainage concerns were raised about the area. Under the project’s developmental umbrella, this segment of Fremont would be closed to non-emergency vehicles and used for pedestrian and bicycle access in an effort to … [Read more...] about Honors complex inches forward
Lynx win first game of season after 0-4 start
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 This definitely wasn't the start that the Minnesota Lynx envisioned to their season — the final of Sylvia Fowles' career. For the second consecutive year the Lynx have lost their first four games. They hope they can turn things around the way they did last season when Cheryl Reeve's team finished 22-10 and earned the No. 3 seed in the playoffs. “We’ll do what we have to do to get where we want to go, because there’s only one path,” Reeve recently said. “And that path is to be able to be difficult to play against from a physical standpoint and mental standpoint, your defense, your connection on offense.” Minnesota finally got its first win on Tuesday night, beating Los Angeles 87-84 on a three-point play by Kayla McBride with two seconds left. She finished with 24 points to lead the Lynx in her first game of the season after finishing playing overseas. While McBride is back, the … [Read more...] about Lynx win first game of season after 0-4 start
