Towns across Texas are being overwhelmed by tens of thousands of surging illegal migrants, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton told a press conference Wednesday. The press conference took place along the U.S. border with Mexico and included sheriffs from cities across the state who are “overwhelmed” by the surge of illegal migrants. Pinky Gonzales, sheriff of Refugio County, Texas, said the rural area 180 miles north of the border with a population of 1,000 has been invaded by lawbreakers. “We have had these human smugglers go through our town going 80 miles an hour in a 35-mile speed zone,” Gonzales said. “I mean this is serious stuff. They have no regard for property or human lives, I mean at all.” “We have just been overwhelmed with these cases,” Gonzales said. Micah Harmon, sheriff of Lavaca County, Texas, said his deputies are continually responding to incidents involving migrants that are straining his deputies and depleting resources. “It’s not just a border … [Read more...] about Texas Sheriff on Border Migrant Surge: ‘Not Just a Texas Problem. Fewer Americans are identifying the Chinese coronavirus as the most important problem facing the United States, a Gallup poll released Wednesday found. While the survey found the virus remaining the top problem, there has been a relatively steady decline in the percentage of Americans who identify it as the most important problem. Currently, 20 percent name the coronavirus the most important issue, down from the 45 percent who said the same one year ago, in April 2020. In February, the percentage stood at 26 percent. In March, 25 percent of respondents identified “coronavirus/diseases” as the “most important problem facing this country today,” followed by “the government” (20 percent), and immigration, race relations, and the economy, all of which garnered 8 percent. The coronavirus remained the top issue in April but dipped five points to 20 percent, followed by the government and immigration which garnered 14 percent, race relations which saw 12 percent, and the economy … [Read more...] about Gallup Poll: Fewer Americans Citing Coronavirus as the Most Important Problem Facing the U.S.

(CNN) From Dwayne " The Rock " Johnson, to Herschel Walker , to Caitlyn Jenner , potential celebrity candidates seem to be cropping up at all levels of elected office in the US. While some trumpet these prospects as a keystone of American democracy -- almost anyone can run for office regardless of qualifications -- others laugh off the ambitions of entertainers as misguided attention grabs. Still others cheer on the candidacies of celebrities whose partisan affiliation lines up with their own and lambaste those running on the other side of the aisle. Lauren A. RTD has another 90 days to solve technology problems that have plagued at-grade crossing safety gates causing service delays on the University of Colorado A Line since it opened. The Federal Railroad Administration on Wednesday granted another waiver, which expires on April 30, that allows the train between Denver Union Station and Denver International Airport to keep running, Nate Currey, RTD spokesman said on Wednesday. A glitch in software that closes at-grade safety gates at vehicle crossings along the A Line route causes gates to close seven seconds before a train arrives, and open five seconds after it leaves, Currey said. As it was designed, the software system is static and can’t take into account potential delays, or early arrivals caused by train operators unexpectedly accelerating or decelerating, passenger boarding and departing times, or changes in movement of vehicle traffic. Changes are being made to the software to compensate for those variables, Currey … [Read more...] about Feds give RTD another 90 days fix A-Line crossing problems
Former Obama adviser David Axelrod argued Wednesday on CNN that President Joe Biden didn’t offer a solution” to the immigration crisis during his address to a joint session of Congress. Anchor Anderson Cooper said, “President Biden didn’t talk about — and a number of Republicans and even Mark Kelly a Democrat has been criticizing him tonight, for not talking about the issue on the border and the crisis with so many people coming across the past few months.” Axelrod said, “This obviously has been the biggest problem that has cropped up in his first 100 days, that continues to be a festering sore for him. I think he hopes the discussion of immigration reform would signify — he did talk about assigning the vice president to try to resolve some of the issues that are leading to the crisis. He didn’t completely — he didn’t offer a solution, particularly tonight. But you know, again, just getting back to his speech. I really, you know, in some way, I regret that he had to touch all … [Read more...] about Axelrod: Biden ‘Didn’t Offer a Solution’ for His ‘Biggest Problem’ at the U.S.-Mexico Border
