Three times per month, Donald Wetzel heads to a drive-up automated teller machine near his Dallas home. “It’s convenient and fast, and I’ve got my money and I’m gone,” the 90-year-old tells The Post. But he keeps his own accomplishments humble during these trips. Wetzel invented America’s very first ATM, which debuted 50 years ago on Sept. 2, 1969, at the former Chemical Bank (now a Chase location) in Rockville Center, Long Island. “I’m proud that it all worked out well and I feel good I had the idea, but a lot of people have had a lot of ideas,” he says. He’s even quick to add that his wife, 87-year-old Eleanor, has never once used an ATM. “She’s afraid that the machine will take her card and not give it back to her,” he quips. Bank of America has notified regulators it will close a location at 767 Cayuga St. in the Village of Lewiston on Oct. 30. The bank is still deciding whether to keep at ATM operating at the site, said Tara Burke, a bank spokeswoman. Bank of America owns the location that will close. Burke said Bank of America considers a variety of factors, such as customer traffic, when it decides to close a branch. As of June 2017, the most recently available statistics from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., the Cayuga Street branch had $44 million in deposits, second lowest among the four Niagara County branches Bank of America had at the time. Bank of America is preparing to close another area branch, this time in the Town of Hamburg. The bank will shut its location at Southwestern Boulevard and Rogers Road on Nov. 6, according to the bank's website. Bank of America has another branch in the village of Hamburg, at 43 Main St. The Southwestern Boulevard location, which the bank leases, sits at the front of a plaza containing a Walmart supercenter. Among 20 Erie County branches operated last year by Bank of America, the Southwestern location ranked 14th in deposits, according to Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. data. Bank of America earlier this year closed a branch in Niagara Falls and is preparing to close its Lewiston location, at 767 Cayuga St., on Oct. 30. WASHINGTON (Circa) — On Friday, the FBI sent an alert to U.S. banks warning of a plot by cyber-criminals to fraudulently withdraw some untold millions of dollars from ATM machines in a coordinated, global cyber heist. It would make for a compelling Hollywood movie but for the fact that cyber-enabled bank robbery is a daily threat for financial institutions and growing concern for federal law enforcement. The alert was obtained by computer security researcher Brian Krebs and read, in part, "The FBI has obtained unspecified reporting indicating cyber-criminals are planning to conduct a global Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cash out scheme in the coming days, likely associated with an unknown card issuer breach and commonly referred to as an 'unlimited operation.'" Typically, an "unlimited operation" is a multi-phase hacking exploit where cyber-criminals are able to access virtually "unlimited" criminal proceeds.
