WESTON (CBSMiami) – The Broward Sheriff’s Office announced Monday night that they have arrested a 16-year-old boy for making threats to Cypress Bay High School in Weston. Cypress Bay was placed on a code red last Friday after school employees received warnings there would be a shooting at the school. On Friday, both the school and investigators searched for the source of the threat, but to no avail. The threats continued Monday, so the school was placed on code yellow. This time, however, detectives were able to locate the source, arresting a Cypress Bay junior. The teen was taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center. He faces two counts for making a false report concerning the use of a firearm and two counts for writing threats to kill. According to BSO, this is the third teen arrested since Thursday for making school threats. … [Read more...] about BSO: 16-Year-Old Arrested For Making Threats To Cypress Bay High School In Weston

Trump administration cancels funding for California high-speed rail
The Trump administration said Tuesday that it’s canceling $929 million of federal funding for California’s high-speed rail project and demanding the return of $2.6 billion that’s already been spent. Gov. Gavin Newsom quickly denounced the move as political retribution for the state’s resistance to a southern border wall and said California will fight for the money. The administration made its move a week after Newsom suggested that the state was refocusing its $77 billion plan to run 220-mph trains between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Because of cost overruns and delays, he said, the state would concentrate on starting service in the Central Valley between Merced and Bakersfield. President Trump seized on the governor’s statement in a tweet, calling California’s rail plan a “disaster” and saying he wanted the state to return federal money that has been invested in the project. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, a Bakersfield … [Read more...] about Trump administration cancels funding for California high-speed rail
California governor on wall funding: ‘Donald Trump, we’ll see you in court’
SACRAMENTO — California is preparing to sue over President Trump’s declaration of a national emergency along the southern border, on the grounds that diverting money to build a wall would harm the state’s efforts to fight drug trafficking. Gov. Gavin Newsom and state Attorney General Xavier Becerra said at a news conference Friday that they expect to join several other states in challenging Trump’s action and that a lawsuit will be filed soon. Newsom dismissed the president’s emergency declaration as “political theater” to satisfy a campaign promise. “He’s been embarrassed, and his base needs to be fed,” Newsom said. “Donald Trump, we’ll see you in court.” Speaking in the White House Rose Garden earlier in the day, Trump argued that a surge of immigrants and drugs flowing across the U.S.-Mexico border constituted a national emergency, which would allow him to draw on money to pay for construction of the wall … [Read more...] about California governor on wall funding: ‘Donald Trump, we’ll see you in court’
New Navigation Center opens; nearby tent camps dwindle
Ismael Tablada was worried. Ever since a big electric-company complex closed in 2015 next to where he works in San Francisco’s Mission District, the block had become thick with camps of homeless people. Then city leaders decided to turn the old complex at South Van Ness Avenue and Cesar Chavez Street into a Navigation Center homeless shelter. Great, Tablada thought. Now we’ll be the new Skid Row. What happened was just the opposite — the camps vanished soon after the Navigation Center opened three weeks ago. On Monday, Tablada got his first good look inside it and marveled at the change it has brought to the neighborhood where he has been a sales representative at the Auto Zone supply store for many years. “I was wondering what happened to all those encampments that were all around this building just a month ago, and now I know,” Tablada said. “They came here, and it really looks like now they have a better shot at life. They really needed … [Read more...] about New Navigation Center opens; nearby tent camps dwindle
