Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo filed a lawsuit against Attorney General Letitia James for failing to provide him with legal representation when he was taken to court over harassment allegations. "Sexually harassing young women who work for you is not part of anyone’s job description,’ a spokesperson for James told the New York Daily News Thursday. According to court documents filed Wednesday, Cuomo argues that he is entitled to representation at the state's expense to defend a lawsuit against him because the allegations against him happened "while he was acting within the scope of his public employment and … [Read more...] about Andrew Cuomo sues NY AG to cover legal costs in harassment lawsuit

Washington had just graduated from an EMT course and done well on her practical exam. Just one written exam remained before she could officially make good on her promise to herself to find a job she was passionate about and that could provide a good life for her then-seven-year-old daughter. Washington's friend wasn't home, so she got back into her car and headed for home. The regular route was blocked; a detour pushed her further downtown. It was crowded, way more … [Read more...] about Opinion: Five years after deadly violence in Charlottesville, she’s still trying to live through it
Man who killed a woman when he rammed his car into Charlottesville counterprotest gets life in prison
Charlottesville, Virginia (CNN) James A. Fields Jr., the man who drove into a crowd of counterprotesters in Charlottesville's "Unite the Right" rally two years ago, leaving one woman dead, was sentenced Friday to life in prison in his federal hate crimes case. Fields plead guilty to 29 federal hate crimes in March as part of an agreement that eliminated the death penalty as a possible punishment. Under the punishment imposed by US Judge Michael F. Urbanski, Fields will serve his sentence without the possibility of parole. Before sentencing Fields addressed the judge and said, "I'd like to apologize. I apologize to my mother for putting her through all of this. Every day I think about my actions and how this could have gone differently. I'm sorry." Fields, 22, wore a gray and white jumpsuit in court and was mostly expressionless during the morning testimony. When he apologized, he did not face victims who were in the courtroom. Charlottesville car attacker pleads for mercy in sentencing memo
(CNN) The man who drove into a crowd of counterprotesters in Charlottesville's "Unite the Right" rally two years ago has pleaded for mercy and asked for a sentence less than life imprisonment in his federal hate crimes case . In a sentencing memorandum filed in federal court Friday, James A. Fields Jr. said the court should not give him a life sentence because of his young age, history of mental illness and childhood trauma, and to show that no one is defined by their worst moments. "James did not come to Charlottesville with any plan to commit an act of violence. In the space of only a few minutes, caught in circumstances he did not intend to create, he acted in an aggressive and impulsive manner consistent with his mental health history and his age," the memo reads. "In a matter of seconds he caused irreparable harm for which there is no excuse. But this Court can understand his actions, without excusing them, as symptomatic of transient immaturity, and not consider them to … [Read more...] about Charlottesville car attacker pleads for mercy in sentencing memo

New movies to stream this week: ‘The Princess,’ ‘Day Shift’ and more
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 Between "The Crown," Kristen Stewart in "Spencer" and tabloid culture's insatiable hunger for all things royal, viewers would be forgiven for thinking one more documentary about Princess Diana is gratuitous at best - or, being timed to the 25th anniversary of her death, morbidly opportunistic at worst. But "The Princess," Ed Perkins's absorbing, thoughtful documentary, might be the film we've been waiting for all along. Eschewing the usual conceits of talking heads, voice-overs and bio-fiction narrative tropes, Perkins simply assembles images from Diana's life, entirely gleaned from archival footage. Those clips - her fairy-tale courtship with Prince Charles, their "wedding of the century," the ensuing troubled marriage and breakup, her transformation from fey English rose to paparazzi catnip and, finally, her martyrdom at the hands of the media she both hid from and … [Read more...] about New movies to stream this week: ‘The Princess,’ ‘Day Shift’ and more
