It's common for car dealerships and manufacturers to offer special promotions to entice customers to trade in their current car for a sparkling new model. It could be a promise of discounted prices, an inflated trade-in value, rebates or zero-percent financing. The promotion that drew Harry Witt to local Hyundai dealerships was a common one. It was an offer to eliminate early termination fees on his current Hyundai lease if he would lease a new vehicle. It seemed simple. But more than two-and-a-half years after he took the deal, a collection agency came after him for what it said was a nearly $1,000 early termination fee, documents show. Even worse, the alleged lack of payment ended up on Witt's credit report. "This is outrageous," Witt said. "I'm not responsible for the early termination fee." It started in January 2016 when Witt received a letter from his dealer, Maxon Hyundai in Union. It said he could return his leased 2013 Elantra without penalty if he leased a new car. Associated Press Published 5:24 p.m. UTC Jun 8, 2018 HELENA – The Helena School District is changing a policy that allows the district to use collection agencies to recover school lunch debt. MORE: Helena schools forwarding lunch debt to collection agency The district received backlash in April after saying it planned to turn over $100,000 in school debts to collections. Superintendent Jack Copps said he had been in the hospital and the announcement went out without his approval. He said such a policy punishes students from low-income families. The Independent Record reports Copps told the school board Tuesday that the district realized it was inconsistent in notifying parents about lunch debt and better communication would help. Under the new policy, to be voted on next Tuesday, weekly notifications will be sent home with students who have lunch debt and principals or other school officials will contact families when the debt reaches $30. Helena Public Schools will begin using a collection agency as part of a last-ditch effort to recoup more than $100,000 from families who haven't paid for school meals. A press release sent Thursday said the school board policy that permits using collection agencies for school meal debt was approved last May, but district officials say they have worked hard to avoid going that route. The district has been sending notes home in backpacks, sending emails, calling parents and mailing letters that include instructions on how to apply for free and reduced meals. School district officials said they don't track how many of the students who owe money would qualify for free and reduced lunch versus how many have the ability to pay the balance, but acknowledged collection agencies might further burden some low-income families.“This is significant debt and we have a fiscal responsibility,” Barb Ridgway, administrator of staff and student services, said. The announcement said the … [Read more...] about Helena schools turning to collection agency to recoup $100K worth of unpaid student meals
