“Hey! I had sex in that pantry!” That’s what I said to Madrone Art Bar owner Spike Krouse, grinning as we passed through the kitchen of his apartment, which is connected by a secret staircase that leads to the venue he owns downstairs. This was not the first time I’ve bragged to Krouse about my lustful dalliance in his larder, but it is probably the first time I’ve seen this place since the licentious act occurred at a Halloween party in 2006. Back then, the apartment was full of rambunctious 20-somethings who threw raucous parties and staged naked photo shoots (not necessarily at the same time, but really, anything is possible). Settling down over some mezcal at his living room table, we begin to chat about the much-adored downstairs bar that Krouse has helmed since 2008. While there, I can’t stop myself from marveling at what a difference 16 years and some semi-responsible grownups can do to a place. What I foggily remember as the type of giant, quirky, San … [Read more...] about How a Western Addition pharmacy became one of SF’s most cherished party bars

Meet the Rapper Who Made a Song Out of New York’s Downtown Art Scene
On Tuesday night, at the Orchard Street sports bar Hair of the Dog, Kevin the Human Carpet grinned with unbridled glee as he shimmied himself into his signature rolled-up red rug, ready to be stepped on. Kevin is a longtime New York icon whose frequent presence at insider parties is the stuff of legend. To book Kevin is to signify your familiarity with cool scenes past and present, and Blaketheman1000, an NYC rapper described by one fan as “ the Drake of Dimes Square ,” certainly possesses this knowledge. (Dimes Square, for the uninitiated, is a small patch of the Lower East Side that represents, or represented , an extremely generative base for perpetually online young creatives.) Tuesday marked the release party of Blaketheman1000's new single, “Dean Kissick,” and the place was packed with music label insiders, art world denizens, Gen Z wannabes, party photographer Cobrasnake and representatives from the hot upstart newspaper The Drunken Canal . … [Read more...] about Meet the Rapper Who Made a Song Out of New York’s Downtown Art Scene
Ricky Gervais Calls On Northbrook Nature Preserve To Release Coyote
0 Community Corner "Rocky," a 4-year-old coyote, has been housed at the River Trail Nature Center since 2018 after being mistaken for a dog. Eric DeGrechie , Patch Staff Posted Reply NORTHBROOK, IL — Ricky Gervais has a long history of being involved with animal rights and advocacy. Earlier this week, the actor and comedian expressed his concerns about the well-being of a coyote living at the River Trail Nature Center in Northbrook. "Rocky," a 4-year-old coyote, has lived by itself at the Cook County forest preserve since 2018, when he was originally mistaken for a dog. Gervais is backing the efforts of In Defense of Animals and the Chicago Alliance for Animals, two animal protection organizations working to get the coyote released from River Trail. "Rocky should not suffer the consequences of human error — it's not his fault that people mistook him for a German Shepard puppy," Gervais said in a statement and on social … [Read more...] about Ricky Gervais Calls On Northbrook Nature Preserve To Release Coyote

Schumer Dismisses Question About If Biden Should Seek Re-election
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) would not directly address whether he believes President Joe Biden should run for re-election in 2024. “I’m not focusing on that,” Schumer replied when asked about a the subject during an interview with SiriusXM show host Joe Madison. “If we get a couple more seats in the Senate — right now, if the election were held today, we would pick up a few seats,” the New York Democrat then said of the upcoming midterm elections. “We’re doing great.” Schumer’s remarks come after the Senate Majority Leader pledged to support Biden if he seeks a second White House term. “I have said if he runs, I’ll support him,” the lawmaker told reporters in late July. However, not all Democrats are eager to see Biden run for the presidency again. Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) made headlines last month after coming out against the idea of a second Biden term. Phillips told Chad Hartman of WCCO-AM: I have respect for Joe Biden. I think he has — … [Read more...] about Schumer Dismisses Question About If Biden Should Seek Re-election
Ohio Supreme Court Sides With Oberlin: College Doesn’t Need to Pay Slander Damages Until Appeals Are Done
The Ohio Supreme Court ruled this week that Oberlin College does not have to pay the $36 million judgment it owes to a mom-and-pop bakery that the school slandered as racist while the appeals process plays out. While the Tuesday ruling doesn’t mean that the woke college is off the hook, Oberlin is not obligated to pay Gibson’s Bakery while the ruling against the school is appealed, according to a report by Cleveland.com. Oberlin President Carmen Twillie Ambar (Oberlin College/YouTube) This undated photo shows the Women and Trans* Collective, also known as the Baldwin Cottage, at Oberlin College and Conservatory in Ohio. (Flikr) The appeal is being heard by the Ohio Supreme Court after two lower courts rejected the college’s initial attempts to get out of paying the family-owned business, which Oberlin falsely accused of racism. In a motion to the court, Oberlin reportedly cited state law and Ohio Rules of Civil Procedure as evidence that it didn’t need to pay … [Read more...] about Ohio Supreme Court Sides With Oberlin: College Doesn’t Need to Pay Slander Damages Until Appeals Are Done
Family Bakery Wins $11 Million Verdict Against Oberlin College
An Ohio jury ordered Oberlin College to pay $11.2 million in compensatory damages to a family bakery smeared by the university as racist. Back in November of 2016, three Oberlin students were caught attempting to steal bottles of wine from Gibson’s Bakery, which has been part of the small community of 8,300 since 1885 . According to a CBS News report published in December of 2017, the three young men were arrested for “kicking and punching” the owner’s son, Allyn Gibson, and eventually “pleaded guilty in August to attempted theft and aggravated trespassing.” Seems fairly cut and dried, no? After all, what you have here is a small business in a small college town that has had a good relationship with its community for more than a century. What’s more, Gibson’s also had a business relationship with the university. So after three students try to steal from the bakery and then plead guilty that should be that, no? Well, nothing is cut and dried when it comes to the … [Read more...] about Family Bakery Wins $11 Million Verdict Against Oberlin College
