It had been about six months since he had seen any great white sharks hanging around Dana Point waters, until Wednesday, when he launched his drone and spotted two 6-to 8-foot sharks lingering about 10 yards from shore in about 3 to 4 feet of water. Total coincidence after posting yesterday's shark photo, but while flying the drone yesterday afternoon I spotted 2 great whites lurking around pretty close to shore! @danawharf @abc7la @cbsla @abcnews @cbsnews @nbc @nbcla @nbcsandiego @ktla5news @danapointtimes @s_c_times #sharks #shark #greatwhiteshark #greatwhite #danapoint #orangecounty #California #capistranobeach #capobeach #dji #phantom #phantom4 #drone #fromwhereidrone #sanclemente A post shared by matt larmand (@mattlarmand) on … [Read more...] about Watch 2 great white sharks close to shore in Dana Point – will sightings increase as spring gets underway?
Dana point whale watching
By Laylan Connelly | [email protected] | Orange County RegisterPUBLISHED: March 27, 2018 at 3:39 pm | UPDATED: March 27, 2018 at 3:44 pm The two massive gray whales rolled around, spinning as they embraced just off the Dana Point Headlands. They didn’t seem to notice, or even care, that the pod of Pacific white-sided dolphins was joining the party. “It was really cool. They didn’t care about the boat, or the dolphins,” said Dana Wharf Whale Watching captain Frank Brennan. “They just let down their guard.” It’s not the first time Brennan has seen dolphins hanging around and frolicking with whales, a treat for passengers when they hang out in the same area together. “I’ll be with the whales and see the dolphins and say (to passengers) ‘if these guys come together, you’re in for a treat,'” Brennan said. “They goof off together, they are like distant cousins. If they do, we always get fun behavior like … [Read more...] about Drone video shows dolphins playing next to gray whales off Dana Point
By Laylan Connelly | [email protected] | Orange County RegisterFebruary 28, 2018 at 1:42 pm Take a look around town, and Dana Point’s love for whales is apparent. A detailed mosaic shows a whale breaching along Pacific Coast Highway, whale art dots concrete dividers on the busy road. Flags with whales wave around town. At Doheny State Beach, life-size paintings along the bike path show passerby how big these behemoth creatures can get. On any given day, boats venture out to the open ocean in search of the marine mammals for passengers who marvel at getting up close to the creatures. The Festival of Whales – running March 3 and 4, then again on 10 and 11, will have everything from a parade to a sand castle contest, lectures and even a cardboard dingy race. Here’s just a few things to do: 1. Go whale watching: If you’ve never been on a boat, now would be the time. Gray whales have been spotted daily passing by the area, using the Dana Point … [Read more...] about 10 ways to celebrate whales at the upcoming Dana Point Festival of the Whales

By Laylan Connelly | [email protected] | Orange County RegisterPUBLISHED: January 30, 2018 at 3:57 pm | UPDATED: January 30, 2018 at 4:00 pm Ryan Divel felt the rush of water, like when a person swims past in a pool. But Divel, a longtime surfer from Dana Point, was wading in the vast blue ocean. And this was no person swimming past him as he treaded lightly in just six feet of water at Strands Beach. “I stuck my face and phone underwater and saw this gray mass go by me,” he said. It was only when he looked at the footage on his new Samsung waterproof phone after reaching shore that he was brought to tears on the sand. Ryan Divel’s expression says it all after a whale came just feet away from him offshore in Dana Point.
