Development of formerly blighted mall property into massive Amazon "fulfillment centers" has integrated Northeast Ohio into the e-commerce giant's global distribution infrastructure. Area public officials are pleased to be part of a shifting retail landscape they said is bringing jobs and economic stability to their residents. Amazon opened a distribution hub in North Randall last October, employing about 3,500 people during the holiday season before notching down to the approximately 2,000 jobs promised during construction. The Amazon Robotics facility will pack and ship smaller items, including books, household items and toys. By BECKY GILLETTE In late December, Amazon announced that it will be locating its first Amazon Fulfillment Center in Mississippi in Marshall County creating 850 full-time jobs paying a minimum of $15 per hour plus benefits. The fulfillment center will cover 554,000 square feet of space that will be used to store, pick, pack and ship items such as lawn and garden products, toiletries, and other household consumer goods. Mississippi Development Authority Executive Director Glenn McCullough, Jr. said Mississippi’s teamwork at the federal, state and local levels, Marshall County’s proximity to a distribution hub and the region’s skilled workforce were instrumental in Amazon’s decision to locate its new fulfillment center at the Chickasaw Trails Industrial Park, which is located about 27 miles from the Memphis International Airport. It's the first Amazon fulfillment center in South Jersey to be powered partly by robots. This is what you need to know about the massive facility: It. Is. BIG. The 655,000-square-foot building on Mantua Grove Road contains three levels. The entire space is the equivalent of roughly 30 football fields.
