Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) has packed her “Council on Climate Solutions” with campaign donors and a major utility lobbyist and dark money group executive that boosted her 2018 campaign, a review of campaign finance records revealed. Whitmer issued Executive Order 2020-182 last September to create the board, which advises the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy . “The science is clear, and message urgent: the earth’s climate is now changing faster than at any point in the history of modern civilization, and human activities are largely responsible for this change,” the order said. Members of the advisory board are tasked with creating the “MI Healthy Climate Plan,” which is to “serve as the action plan for this state to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition toward economywide carbon neutrality.” A review of appointed members and campaign finance records found 10 of the 21 members donated to Whitmer’s gubernatorial campaign: Kerry … [Read more...] about Gretchen Whitmer Loads ‘Council on Climate Solutions’ with Donors, Utility Lobbyist, Dark Money Group Exec

US Drug Makers Push Profitable, But Unproven, Opioid Solution
Pilloried for their role in the epidemic of prescription painkiller abuse, U.S. drug makers are aggressively pushing their remedy to the problem: a new generation of harder-to-manipulate opioids that have racked up billions in sales, even though there's little proof they reduce rates of overdoses or deaths. Like a spokeswoman for Pfizer Inc., Josephson also noted that some public health officials, including the Food and Drug Administration, have endorsed using ADFs. Intense and costly lobbying The reporting detailed how opioid drug makers and the nonprofits they help fund spent more than $880 million on lobbying and political contributions at the state and federal level over the past decade, eight times what the gun lobby reported for the same period. The money represents the drug makers' spending on all their legislative interests, including opioids. ‘You can't put a price tag on anybody's life’ ‘Staggering’ costs Federal health officials also have pushed back against … [Read more...] about US Drug Makers Push Profitable, But Unproven, Opioid Solution
Court rules British woman who joined ISIS as schoolgirl can’t return to UK
The U.K. Supreme Court ruled on Friday that a British-born woman who went to Syria as a schoolgirl to join ISIS poses a security risk and will not be allowed to return to Britain to fight for her citizenship. Shamima Begum, now 21, left London in 2015 at the age of 15 and traveled to Syria with two school friends, Reuters reported . She later lived in Raqqa, the caliphate's self-declared capitol, and married an ISIS fighter. She had three children since leaving Britain but all of the infants have since died, the outlet noted. However, a court ruled last year that she could only have a fair appeal if she were allowed back to Britain. Friday’s decision means she will have to pursue her appeal against the citizenship move from abroad. “The right to a fair hearing does not trump all other considerations, such as the safety of the public,” said Robert Reed, the President … [Read more...] about Court rules British woman who joined ISIS as schoolgirl can’t return to UK

Kevin McCarthy: Democrats’ $1.9T coronavirus relief bill is ‘too corrupt, liberal’ House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy provides insight into the coronavirus stimulus bill on ‘Fox and Friends.’ A year ago today, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention warned U.S. citizens to prepare for "disruption" from the coronavirus outbreak across American cities. And throughout the past 12 months, we have seen Americans make sacrifices and persevere in the fight against this virus. The progress we have seen in our economy and in our efforts to stop the spread have been substantial. In April 2020, the unemployment rate for American workers stood at 14.7 percent. Today the unemployment rate is 6.3 percent. At the same time, new COVID-19 cases continue to plummet. Thanks to a historic, heroic undertaking by the Trump administration's Operation Warp Speed, 1.45 million Americans are now receiving a vaccine shot every day. These … [Read more...] about Rep. ‘Plan B’ for $15 minimum wage unveiled
Senate Finance Committee Chairman Ron Wyden Ronald (Ron) Lee Wyden Biden nominee previews post-Trump trade agenda Labor expands jobless aid for workers who reject employers skirting COVID-19 rules Democrats hesitant to raise taxes amid pandemic MORE (D-Ore.) on Friday announced Democrats’ “Plan B” to raise the minimum wage after the Senate parliamentarian ruled that an earlier proposal from House Democrats to raise the federal minimum wage $15 an hour did not meet special budgetary rules. Wyden is proposing a workaround solution that would impose a 5 percent tax penalty on large corporations if any of their workers earn less than a certain amount, with the penalty increasing over time. The language would ensure that large companies would have a significant financial incentive to raise wages, even if they are not mandated by law to pay employees more than the current federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour.
