(CNET) A complex targeted virus has been discovered stealing data in the Middle East, security researchers announced today. The malware -- dubbed Flame -- has been operation since 2010 and appears to be a state sponsored, Kaspersky Labs said today, but it was not sure of its origins. Flame is designed to steal information about targeted systems and stored files as well as computer display contents and audio conversations, CNET reports. "The complexity and functionality of the newly discovered malicious program exceed those of all other cyber menaces known to date," Kaspersky Labs said in statement announcing the malware's discovery. The virus is about 20 times the size of Stuxnet, malware that targeted the controls of an Iranian nuclear facility. The largest concentration of infected machines is in Iran, followed by Israel/Palestine region, Sudan, Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. "The preliminary findings of the research, conducted upon an urgent request from ITU, … [Read more...] about CBS News Logo Massive cyber-attack dubbed Flame uncovered in Middle East, say researchers
Last Updated Sep 11, 2015 3:39 PM EDT The FBI warned companies Friday that hackers inspired by Islamic extremists may attempt to conduct a cyber-attack to mark the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, CBS News homeland security correspondent Jeff Pegues reports."The FBI is aware of threats regarding cyber-attacks aimed to coincide with the anniversary of September 11th," the agency said in a statement. "While website defacements and the posting of personally identifiable information have become too common, the FBI takes all threats seriously and will investigate as appropriate."The bureau wants companies to be prepared, Pegues reports. Law enforcement has been working on partnerships with the private sector as a way of increasing vigilance against cyber-attacks.Friday's warning follows claims of a cyber-attack inspired by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria revealing the personal information of President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama. That the fragile cease-fire in Ukraine collapsed in the first dark hours of July should not surprise observers; Russia has pursued low-level cyber hostilities against Kiev nearly since the onset of the crisis, and certainly during the recent short-lived peace offensive. Nor should we be startled by reports that cyber warriors sought to sabotage May's presidential election in Ukraine with bogus vote tallies and came close to gifting far-right, pro-Moscow candidate Dmytro Yarosh with 37 percent when he really got less than 1 percent. More instructive is the fact that the Kremlin has not upped the stakes with an overt cyber-attack on Ukraine's critical infrastructure. An assault that cripples Kiev's military command and control, civilian fiscal and energy systems, even air traffic control and broadcasting is believed feasible, but remains tucked away, unexploited, in a sealed folder on a Russian general's desk. That speaks volumes about the unpredictability of cyber weapons. The effects … [Read more...] about CBS News Logo Why hasn’t Russia unleashed a cyber attack on Ukraine?
WASHINGTON - There has been another security breach at the White House but this time the intruders didn't go over the fence, they hacked their way in. There have been more than a few fence jumpers at the White House lately. But as security threats go, they don't amount to much. The more pressing threat: cyber attacks on White House computers. Those happen every day. Officials acknowledge that over the last few weeks, one penetrated the non-classified White House computer system. The attack's origin is unknown but a U.S. official said Russia or its proxies are the prime suspects. Admiral Mike Rogers, head of the National Security Agency, says the public and private sectors need to do more to combat growing cybercrime. "We can either deal with this now, in a collaborative, professional way, or we can wait until we get hit with the 2 x 4 right across the forehead." The cyber attack continues and a White House memo to staffers said "the temporary outages and loss of connectivity that … [Read more...] about After latest WH breach, more needed to defend against cyber attack
Cyber attacks have been in the news a lot lately. From cases of ransomware holding hospital records hostage to the hack that crippled Sony t0 the security breach that left VTech toys vulnerable, a lot of damage can be done if companies don't adequately protect their data. But oftentimes, signs that a system has been compromised are not clear until it's too late. Human analysts may miss the evidence, while automated detection systems tend to generate a lot of false alarms. What's the solution? Cue the rise of artificial intelligence, or at least AI that can work in tandem with human analysts to spot digital clues that could be signs of trouble. A research team from MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) and machine-learning startup PatternEx have developed an artificial intelligence platform called AI2 -- or AI "squared" -- that can predict cyber attacks 85 percent of the time, working together with input from human analysts. This is about three times … [Read more...] about CBS News Logo Artificial intelligence could help predict cyber attacks
