Owen Burney and his team knew they had to save what they could. Atop their list was a priceless bank of millions of ponderosa pine, spruce and other conifer seeds meant to help restore fire-ravaged landscapes across the American West. Group Looking To End Cash Bail Heads To The Deep South
The Bail Project, a group that previously let out soon-to-be criminals, seeks to end cash bail in the Deep South as it expands its influence in the region. Organizers of The Bail Project’s “Bail Out the South” campaign told The Associated Press (AP) that the group seeks to pay the bail of thousands and will open offices in Alabama, Florida, Mississippi and South Carolina in 2021 — doubling the organization’s presence in the Deep South. Their ultimate goal is to put an end to the practice of cash bail by partnering with local organizations and advocacy groups, CEO Robin Steinberg told the AP. “When I think about our work around social justice and racial justice, you simply can’t talk about those issues without dealing with what’s happening in the South,” Steinberg said of the new undertaking. The Bail Project launched in 2018 in the wake of a 10-year effort in New York City spearheaded by Steinberg and The Bronx Freedom Fund, according to the group’s website. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 8 LONDON (AP) — Manchester United slumped to one last defeat of a sorry season by losing 1-0 to Crystal Palace on the final day of the Premier League thanks to Wilfried Zaha’s first-half goal on Sunday. Watched by recently hired manager Erik Ten Hag in south London, United was able at least to avoid the embarrassment of lining up in the Europa Conference League next season because of West Ham losing away to Brighton. The campaign showed how far the team is behind Manchester City and Liverpool, which were involved in a dramatic final day that saw the title again lifted at the Etihad Stadium. One of Ralf Rangnick’s final acts in interim charge of the United team was to hand Hannibal Mejbri a first … [Read more...] about Man United slumps to 1-0 loss, qualifies for Europa League
Opinion: What a Nobel laureate’s take on Donald Trump reveals about today
Sign up to get this weekly column as a newsletter. We're looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. (CNN) Shortly after Donald Trump was elected President of the United States, Nobel laureate Toni Morrison wrote in The New Yorker: "Unlike any nation in Europe, the United States holds whiteness as the unifying force. Here, for many people, the definition of 'Americanness' is color." Reflecting on efforts -- largely by White men -- to define themselves by sustaining that poisonous definition, Morrison argues that those "who are prepared to abandon their humanity out of fear of black men and women, suggest the true horror of lost status." In Morrison's formulation, fear-driven devotion to racial status is more powerful to many White Americans than even self-interest, shame or any belief in humanity. And it is this reality, that White Americans' anxieties in the face of a changing country have been and continue to be … [Read more...] about Opinion: What a Nobel laureate’s take on Donald Trump reveals about today
