President Biden Joe Biden Democrats see Georgia as opening salvo in war on voting rights MLB could move All-Star game from Georgia after controversial new voter restrictions Biden fires majority of DHS advisory council members MORE ’s rescue plan, recently passed by Congress, is the most significant boost to the American economy since the New Deal. In addition to providing immediate relief to the millions who have lost their jobs in the pandemic, it substantively addresses poverty, which has become all but invisible politically for at least four decades. The major component omitted was a $15 minimum wage. The White House , however, is poised shortly to reintroduce it. The results for those barely getting by will be dramatic. The fate of the poor is consigned to the vicissitudes of the politics and the market. Encoding a $15 minimum wage into federal law will be a major step toward structurally reducing poverty in America. After years of fiscal conservatism and deficit hawkishness, the Republican Party has shown signs of a shift toward a more populist, pro-worker economic platform. Some Republicans have introduced proposals aimed at increasing the minimum wage or providing cash relief that hardly resemble previous efforts to cut spending or taxes, but instead mirror increasing calls to help working-class Americans who were struggling even before the coronavirus pandemic. “There has been a strongly populist bend,” Republican Rep. Peter Meijer told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “I think we’ve seen a lot of folks who are guessing that’s the way the party is going, and are proposing options that are more based around generating broad political support than they are around pursuing a more narrow policy end.” “There’s a recognition [among Republicans] that the government already constantly intervenes in the market,” said Rachel Bovard, the senior director of policy at the Conservative … [Read more...] about Is The GOP Turning Into A Party That Supports Cash Relief And A Higher Minimum Wage?
Agreeing on legislative strategy will be the next step for Biden and the two Democratic congressional leaders. Photo: Jabin Botsford/The Washington Post via Getty Images Securing congressional approval of most elements of Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan was not only a great start for the Democratic trifecta that controls both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue. It was also a fine example of legislative craftsmanship and leadership needed to enact such a large and complicated bill with virtually no Democratic defections (including none at all in the Senate). What comes next will be harder. The contents of that first big bill were known well before Biden took office, the timing was dictated by its packaging as a COVID-19 emergency relief and stimulus package, and the legislative strategy for enacting it became clear the moment Senate Republicans made a puny opening compromise offer . Democrats had the luxury of being allowed two uses this calendar year of the budget reconciliation … [Read more...] about What Will Be in the Next Big Democratic Bill?
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law on Monday adjusting his term limits which would allow him to potentially remain in the nation’s highest office until 2036, the Associated Press (AP) reported . A July 1, 2020, referendum saw the Russian electorate overwhelmingly back a constitutional amendment package which included a provision allowing Putin to seek an additional two terms as president once his current term in office expires in 2024. The Putin regime claimed 78 percent of voters backed the changes while 21 percent opposed them. State media reported turnout as exceeding 65 percent. The amendment package included over 200 changes including a minimum wage, a ban on same-sex marriage, inflation adjustments for pensions, and a firm two-term limit on Russian presidents excluding the incumbent officeholder. Voters could only choose to approve or reject the entire slate of proposals. Though the Kremlin admitted more than 800 instances of voting irregularities, … [Read more...] about Putin Signs Law Allowing Him to Stay in Power Until 2036
