COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The fatal police shooting of Ma’Khia Bryant, a Black teenager seen on video charging at two people with a knife, came within minutes of the verdict in George Floyd’s killing — causing outrage by some over the continued use of lethal force by Columbus police. Officials with the Columbus Division of Police released body cam footage of the shooting Tuesday night just hours after it happened, a departure from protocol as the force faces immense scrutiny from the public following a series of recent high-profile police killings that have led to clashes. DOJ to probe Minneapolis police
Attorney General Merrick Garland Merrick Garland Biden says Chauvin verdict is step forward in fight against racial injustice Senate confirms Biden's nominee for No. 2 official at DOJ Why Biden's gun policy doesn't go far enough MORE announced Wednesday morning that the Department of Justice (DOJ) will open an investigation into the policing practices of law enforcement in Minneapolis. The investigation comes a day after a jury in Minneapolis found former city police officer Derek Chauvin guilty of two counts of murder and one count of manslaughter in the death of George Floyd last May. “Although the state's prosecution was successful, I know that nothing can fill the void that the loved ones of George Floyd have felt since his death,” Garland said Wednesday morning. Leadership and accountability: A military lesson for police reform
Defense lawyers have a saying: “If the law is against you, pound on the facts; if the facts are against you, pound on the table.” For military defense lawyers, there is a slight modification: “Before you pound on the table, pound on the chain of command.” Why? Because in the military, leaders are accountable for the failures of their subordinates and military juries are the harshest critics of their colleagues whose leadership failures contribute to misconduct. Indeed, the Vanessa Guillen disappearance at Fort Hood, Texas, and its subsequent fallout, is a prime and recent example of how failures at low levels of the military result in accountability at high levels. With all the public attention focused on police reforms, as a former military officer and lawyer I find it perplexing why leadership accountability is not the central focus of this dialogue. How did a former police officer such as Derek Chauvin get to the point where he felt it was appropriate, as the prosecutor in … [Read more...] about Leadership and accountability: A military lesson for police reform

Emotional Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) members on Tuesday cheered a jury’s decision to find former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin guilty of murdering George Floyd, but they said the moment now demands that Congress take the next step: enacting criminal justice reform. “This is just the first step,” Rep. Joyce Beatty Joyce Birdson Beatty Black Caucus: Guilty verdict a 'catalyst' for police reform Democrats debate timing and wisdom of reparations vote Biden's DOJ civil rights nominee faces sharp GOP criticism MORE (D-Ohio), chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus, said moments after the verdict was announced. “We are hopeful that today will be the catalyst to turn the pain, the agony, the justice delays into actions that go far beyond today.” Those actions primarily focus on the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, which the House passed on March 3 mostly along party lines. Named for Floyd, a Black man who died last year after Chauvin knelt … [Read more...] about Black Caucus: Guilty verdict a ‘catalyst’ for police reform
Government watchdog details severe trauma suffered by separated children
Migrant children separated from their parents through the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” policy experienced more severe mental trauma than children who were not separated, according to a government watchdog report. Separated children “exhibited more fear, feelings of abandonment, and post-traumatic stress” than children who were not separated, according to a report released Wednesday by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) inspector general. According to the report, some children did not understand why they were being separated and sometimes thought their parents had abandoned them. Mental health staff said some children expressed so much grief and confusion over the separation that they cried inconsolably. ADVERTISEMENT The report detailed the challenges faced by mental health professionals who were often overwhelmed by the level of trauma faced by children in HHS custody. As a result of the zero tolerance policy, children stayed in custody … [Read more...] about Government watchdog details severe trauma suffered by separated children
