Last Updated Oct 12, 2009 10:30 PM EDT The conventional wisdom among those following the media industry has long been that YouTube is a long-term losing proposition for its owner, Google, and that the video-sharing unit does not have any viable business model. Fourteen months ago, in challenging those assumptions, I suggested that Google was trying to educate the media companies whose pirated videos account for roughly a third of the monetizable content on YouTube to the potential for creating new advertising revenue streams. In that post, I posited the following model:Continue letting the users find the content and post it to YouTube. Use Google's "Content ID" technology to identify the rightful owner of the video clip. Convince the owner to leave the clip up. Sell ads against the content. Negotiate a revenue share. Sit back and collect the money, thus the name of that post: The Sound of YouTube's Pirated Videos? Ka-Ching! Although (to me) it sounded like a viable model, it did … [Read more...] about The Sound of “Ka-Ching!” is Finally Coming to YouTube
On Monday, the White House announced that as President Obama departs from office in January 2017, he’ll also be leaving the @POTUS Twitter handle behind for the next American leader. The account’s 11 million-plus followers will stay, but the contents of the feed will go, moving to a new Twitter account: @POTUS44. The 45th president will have a clean slate, to tweet on at his or her own discretion -- at any time of day or night. The White House Facebook and Instagram will be handed over. Here’s an Instagram from Halloween: ...as will White House YouTube. One thing that might come as a surprise -- one of the most viewed YouTube videos uploaded by the White House isn’t a big, splashy event. Instead, it’s some raw video of the president taking a walk on the ellipse, talking to people on the street in May 2014. Joining him on his stroll was one of his closest advisers, John Podesta, who’s now Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman. Here’s … [Read more...] about CBS News Logo What happens to the White House social media accounts after Obama leaves office?
It is fairly likely that if you're signing up for a new Google account these days, it is because you would like a Gmail account. Or perhaps you just want to keep track of favorite videos and subscriptions on YouTube. For some of you, it might be because you want a Google+ account. Well, whether you want one or not, when you sign up for a new Google account these days, you're getting both a Gmail account and a Google+ profile automatically registered to you. The Google Operating System blog has a rundown based on its own experiment with testing these new requirements, which have not been officially explained or revealed by Google itself. Actually, this all makes perfect sense, and it is much easier for new users to have everything set up at once rather than having to separately sign up for Gmail and Google+ later. If you're not interested in Google+, no one is forcing you to make friends or create an elaborate profile. It's also a win for Google as it tries to boost awareness and usage … [Read more...] about CBS News Logo New Google users forced to create Google+ enabled accounts

Tech & Science youtube Internet Conspiracy Google-owned video platform YouTube has rubbished claims made by conspiracy theorist and InfoWars host Alex Jones that his account is being targeted for deletion. On March 3, Jones tweeted that his YouTube profile, called The Alex Jones Channel, had been frozen amid warnings that “all 33 thousand videos” would be erased within 24 hours. Over the last 11 years, Chris Thompson has built a career on YouTube. His personal videos about relationships, sex and LGBTQ issues won him more than 385,000 subscribers. But recent shifts by YouTube led Thompson to cast aside the platform that provided his primary source of income.
