Last Updated Oct 8, 2010 4:48 PM EDT Like Garrison Keillor's Lake Wobegon where every child is above average, government safety crash tests were producing five-star ratings for most vehicles. So for 2011 models, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched new, more rigorous tests. The result: It's a lot tougher for your favorite car, truck or van to get five stars. Of the 33 models rated initially, only two achieved overall five-star ratings: The BMW 5-series and the Hyundai Sonata (more details below). For the first time, NHTSA is giving an overall rating for a vehicle in addition to individual ratings for front crash tests, side crash tests and potential for rollover accidents. The new ratings reduce stars for many models. Notably the Toyota Camry -- which for 2010 models got five stars for front and side crash tests -- got three each in those tests and three overall, even though the 2011 model is little changed. Last Updated Mar 24, 2011 11:04 AM EDT When China's Geely Automobile bought Volvo last year, analysts wondered if Volvo's legendary reputation for safety would take a hit. The Chinese got an A, or at least an A-, on their first test. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is announcing today that Volvo's newest model, the S60, is getting a "Top Safety Pick" rating after its crash tests. Four other Volvo models already have that ranking, and just one model tested, the S40, got less than top grades. When it bought Volvo from Ford Motor last spring, Geely stressed that it planned to continue the safety emphasis, with the same managers running the company and cars still made in Sweden. Ford, which was shedding divisions as its Detroit competitors filed for bankruptcy, agreed to continue supplying engines, transmissions and other parts. Geely plans to open a Beijing factory to produce 300,000 Volvos for the Chinese market -- as many as are now made for the rest of the world. The S60 … [Read more...] about Chinese-Owned Volvo Keeps its Crash Test Mojo
As Jeep displayed a new smaller SUV at the Geneva Motor Show this week, industry figures showed that small SUVs continued selling well in the U.S. even during lackluster overall sales in freezing February. Small SUV sales rose 16 percent in February following a 21 percent gain for all of 2013, according to data compiled by Kelley Blue Book. That makes small SUVs -- also known in the industry as crossovers -- one of the fastest-growing segments in the U.S., according to Karl Brauer, senior analyst for Kelley. The just introduced 2015 Jeep Renegade will fit into the smaller end of this segment as a subcompact SUV similar to the Kia Soul or Nissan Juke. Buyers increasingly have turned to small SUVs as a more stylish alternative to minivans or large sedans that provide enough room to haul people and gear. But prices can be high, with fully-equipped models ranging above $30,000. That may be where the Jeep Renegade comes in. "Subcompact SUVs are going to be the next big … [Read more...] about Are fast-selling small SUVs right for you?
Last Updated Jul 13, 2016 10:57 AM EDT How effective are the headlights on your recent-model small SUV? Not very, according to tests done by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The IIHS, which also does crash-test ratings, tested the headlights on 21 current models. Of these, none got the top "good" rating, and only four ranked as "acceptable." The remainder were graded as "marginal" or "poor."The Institute said in a statement that federal standards for headlights that automakers must meet are set in lab tests and don't reflect real-world driving conditions. "Manufacturers aren't paying enough attention to the actual on-road performance of this basic equipment," said Matthew Brumbelow, IIHS senior research engineer. He noted that headlight performance is important because about half of U.S. traffic deaths happen either after dark or around dawn or dusk. The headlight results for small SUVs, the largest-selling automotive category this year, were even worse than an earlier test … [Read more...] about The subpar headlights of small SUVs
