Analysis by Brad Lendon , CNN Updated 2359 GMT (0759 HKT) June 25, 2022 Seoul, South Korea (CNN) China made a big statement about its naval ambitions with the recent launch of its third and most advanced aircraft carrier. The Fujian -- by far China's biggest, most modern and most powerful aircraft carrier to date -- is the 80,000-ton jewel in the crown of a military expansion that has seen Beijing grow its navy into the world's largest. Its new combat systems -- such as an electromagnetic catapult-assisted launch system -- show China is fast catching up with the United States, experts say, and will give it the ability to launch more aircraft, more quickly, and with more ammunition. That should be enough to give any would-be opponent pause for thought, especially given China's increasing aggression in its territorial disputes with Japan in the East China Sea, a host of Southeast Asian nations in the South China Sea, and its repeated harassment of the self-governed … [Read more...] about Never mind China’s new aircraft carrier, these are the ships the US should worry about

Jeff Bezos’ ship, named for his mom, will no longer be used to catch rockets
New York (CNN Business) Jeff Bezos — the billionaire founder of Amazon and rocket company Blue Origin — made a grand public announcement a year ago that he purchased a ship to capture Blue Origin rockets after they return from space, and he named the vessel after his mother. But now the company says it is doing away with that plan, seeking a more "cost effective" alternative, Blue Origin spokesperson Linda Mills said. It is not clear what will happen to the Jacklyn, as the ship is called, which Bezos dedicated to his mother in a small ceremony in Pensacola, Florida in December 2020. Blue Origin could still use the ship for another purpose or abandon the project altogether. Mills said the company is "still assessing options." One alternative to the big ship is to opt for an autonomous, seafaring platform or barge, much like the droneships that SpaceX uses to catch its rockets after flight. The retrofit and maintenance of the Jacklyn was being … [Read more...] about Jeff Bezos’ ship, named for his mom, will no longer be used to catch rockets
Carnival shares cruise higher on gains in revenue, bookings
MIAMI (AP) — Long-battered shares of Carnival Corp. jumped more than 12% Friday as the cruise line owner reported a big increase in revenue, occupancy levels, and bookings for future trips. However, the company posted a $1.83 billion second-quarter loss and said the effects of the pandemic and higher fuel prices will lead to another loss in the third quarter. The cruise industry was shut down by the pandemic and chafed under regulations that were only recently eased by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Even now, a nascent recovery in cruising is uneven, with more demand in the U.S. for nearby cruises, such as Carnival trips to the Caribbean, than more far-flung itineraries. Carnival, which operates nine cruise brands, said 91% of its fleet is sailing again. Ship occupancy in the quarter that ended last month rose to 69%, compared with 54% in the previous quarter. Bookings nearly doubled from the first quarter and were the strongest since the beginning of the … [Read more...] about Carnival shares cruise higher on gains in revenue, bookings
The Hidden Fees Making Your Bananas, And Everything Else, Cost More
2 Business The story you're about to read is bananas, and it's also about bananas. Pro Publica , News Partner Posted Replies By Michael Grabell, ProPublica June 17, 2022 Last fall, a company called One Banana loaded 600,000 pounds of the fruit from its plantations in Guatemala and Ecuador onto ships bound for the Port of Long Beach in California. Once they arrived, the bananas, packed in refrigerated containers, were offloaded by cranes for trucking to a nearby warehouse, where the fruit would be sent to supermarkets nationwide. But in the midst of a global supply chain crisis, none of the trucking companies the importer normally worked with were willing to come and get the containers. As the bananas sat at the marine terminal, a logistics specialist for One Banana scrambled, contacting more than a dozen trucking firms. With each passing hour, the bananas grew closer to spoiling. "We need to pull out 15 … [Read more...] about The Hidden Fees Making Your Bananas, And Everything Else, Cost More

What Makes a Bathing Suit So Expensive?
To hear more audio stories from publications like The New York Times, download Audm for iPhone or Android . There is a machine in South Brooklyn that looks like a transparent coffin and whirs like an industrial fan. Its metallic innards flit and glide until, within an hour, it releases a swimsuit, dropped from the machine’s underbelly like an egg. It is a high-tech process that seems simple: Click a button, get a very nearly finished swimsuit. In a way, it mirrors the automated, on-demand, two-day-shipping experience that defines shopping for many people in 2022. Yet dozens of decisions were made before the idea of that swimsuit became a tangible thing — decisions that ultimately led to its being priced around $250 and not $25, which is roughly the amount an adult woman spends on a swimsuit in the United States, according to the market research analysts at the NPD Group. But what do those decisions entail? What makes a swimsuit, in this economy , worth that … [Read more...] about What Makes a Bathing Suit So Expensive?

They Tried To Get PPE When We Needed It Most
0 Politics & Government Instead, they got ripped off. Pro Publica , News Partner Posted Reply By J. David McSwane, ProPublica June 8, 2022 Unlike the countless inexperienced middlemen and outright swindlers who jumped into the mask market at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Tim Morgan knew what he was doing. In the 1990s he taught English in Japan and later traveled throughout Asia, scouting factories that produced Nike watches and shades for Sunglass Hut, before he returned to Cleveland in 2000 to form his own import business, International Sourcing Group. Two decades of navigating supply chains and negotiating with far-flung manufacturers taught Morgan it was best to steer his firm clear of the mask frenzy, which was rife with fraud and confusion. In the summer of 2020, though, he was inundated with requests for a similarly cheap but tough-to-get commodity: nitrile gloves. Sailing the high seas with John Davidson, the superstar time forgot
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 9 ON THE SEA OF CORTEZ, Mexico - It takes three flights to get to the airport at La Paz and then a 20-minute drive to reach the marina where John Davidson - the actor, singer, talk-show host, nightclub workhorse and all-around icon of American television's three-channel glory days - is living on his boat. I worried that he regretted allowing me to visit. In January, days before I first planned to come, Davidson emailed because a storm threatened to shut down the harbor. As I tried to rebook my flights, he suggested that we just Zoom. "Wouldn't this be a much simpler way, definitely less costly and save you all this trouble," he wrote. After I had boarded Cantante (Spanish for "singer"), the 42-foot trawler he bought sight unseen last year, he came clean about the lingering concerns that had kept him up the previous night awaiting my arrival - that he … [Read more...] about Sailing the high seas with John Davidson, the superstar time forgot
