Oak Fest Not Happening This Year, Despite Rumors: City Officials
4 Community Corner Rumors circulating social media about Oak Fest, an annual festival which was canceled permanently in 2020, are not true, officials said. Eileen O'Gorman , Patch Staff Posted Replies OAK FOREST, IL — Oak Forest's former annual festival will not be happening this year, according to city officials. The group that organized "Oak Fest," a weekend-long festival which was held over the Fourth of July, permanently disbanded in 2020 following a cancellation due to COVID-19 restrictions. The festival ran from 1987 to 2019, according to event organizers, and was set to have its 33rd year in 2020 before a COVID-19 outbreak caused the fairgrounds to cancel. A month later, the commission announced it voted to disband permanently due to "the difficulty of running an event solely from donations." In years past, the event drew hundreds of south suburban residents and featured local bands such as the Flex Group, … [Read more...] about Oak Fest Not Happening This Year, Despite Rumors: City Officials
Families brace for changes to pandemic-era free school meals
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 8 ESSEX, Vt. (AP) — Before the pandemic, there was no room in the budget for Kate Murphy’s children to buy lunch at school. She and her husband would buy in bulk and make bag lunches at home. So the free school meals that were made available to students nationwide amid the crisis have brought welcome relief, especially since her husband lost his job last year at a bakery company that closed. The free meals gave the Essex Junction, Vermont, family one less thing to worry about. “We make just too much money (literally by just a few dollars) to qualify for free or reduced lunches and other food-related benefits, but not enough to truly ever feel financially comfortable,” Murphy, a mother of four and administrator at a trust company, said by email. The pandemic-era federal aid that made school meals available for free to all public school students — … [Read more...] about Families brace for changes to pandemic-era free school meals
Killing Kittens, an Elite Sex-Party Planner, Is Now Partly Owned by the British Government
The British government is now a shareholder in a company that plans high-end sex parties after the firm took advantage of a program to help businesses during the pandemic. Killing Kittens —which was created by Emma Sayle, a school friend of Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge —is a sex-tech company known for hosting lavish orgies at which guests have to pass a vetting process. When COVID hit, Killing Kittens signed up for a U.K. government scheme called the Future Fund, which helped it stay afloat when its in-person parties became untenable, and it was forced to turn to “Zorgies” (or Zoom orgies). The terms of Future Fund loans contain a clause that converts the loan to equity at the borrower’s next fundraising. The government-run British Business Bank—which oversees the Future Fund—confirmed the project’s stake in Killing Kittens to the Financial Times . Sayle, who owns over a quarter of the sex-tech company, according to financial filings, said the business had … [Read more...] about Killing Kittens, an Elite Sex-Party Planner, Is Now Partly Owned by the British Government
Protests Slated Around Chicagoland After SCOTUS Overturns Roe V. Wade
701 Politics & Government Marches speaking out against overturning of the landmark court decision are slated for Friday evening in Chicago, Wheaton and Naperville. Jeff Arnold , Patch Staff Posted | Updated Replies CHICAGO — As the swift response to Friday morning's Supreme Court decision overturning Roe V. Wade continues, several protests are scheduled for the greater Chicago area against the court's decision to strip women nationwide of the right to have an abortion. Several marches have been announced for Friday evening, including in downtown Chicago and in Wheaton and Naperville, organizers announced on Friday. The events will take place as state leaders — including Gov. J.B. Pritzker, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot and others — have said that Illinois will remain a sanctuary for women who want to have the procedure done in Illinois. Friday's 6-3 court decision opens the door for states to make the procedure of … [Read more...] about Protests Slated Around Chicagoland After SCOTUS Overturns Roe V. Wade
Anthony Williams’ GOP Senate Campaign Pushes To ‘Make America Healthy’
5 Politics & Government KONKOL COLUMN: The level-headed pastor's message of civility is the only reason to pay attention to the Republican primary for U.S. Senate. Mark Konkol , Patch Staff Posted | Updated Replies CHICAGO — There hasn't been a spotlight focused on who might survive the seven-way Republican primary for U.S. Senate from Illinois that insiders believe only allows the "winner" to get clobbered by incumbent Democrat Tammy Duckworth in November. Voters aren't paying much attention, either. A recent poll found 66 percent of expected Republican voters were still undecided in early June. For me, there's only one reason to care: the candidacy of the Rev. Anthony Williams. Williams is running on one issue: Making America healthy. "That means addressing civilian violence as a public health crisis, pushing our nation to the center and remaining calm, cool and steady," he said Wednesday. Williams' … [Read more...] about Anthony Williams’ GOP Senate Campaign Pushes To ‘Make America Healthy’
West pushes Russia into its first foreign debt default since 1918
New York/London (CNN Business) Russia has defaulted on its foreign debt for the first time since the Bolshevik revolution more than a century ago. Following reports that Moscow had failed to pay about $100 million in interest on two bonds during a 30-day grace period that expired Sunday, the White House said the default showed the power of Western sanctions imposed on Russia since it invaded Ukraine. "This morning's news around the finding of Russia's default, for the first time in more than a century, situates just how strong the reactions are that the US, along with allies and partners, have taken, as well as how dramatic the impact has been on Russia's economy," a senior administration official said on the sidelines of a G7 summit in Germany. Russia denied it was in default, saying the payments had been made, in dollars and euros, on May 27 and the money was stuck with Euroclear, a settlement house based in Belgium. The historic default … [Read more...] about West pushes Russia into its first foreign debt default since 1918

Opinion: Biden wants a gas tax holiday. Here are a few better ideas
Charlie Dent is a former Republican congressman from Pennsylvania who served as chair of the House Ethics Committee from 2015 until 2017 and chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction, Veterans Affairs and Related Agencies from 2015 until 2018. He is a CNN political commentator. The views expressed in this commentary are his own. View more opinion on CNN. (CNN) During my first term in Congress (2005-2006), I vividly recall a surge in gasoline prices . Democrats blasted then President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney, demonizing them for their prior work in fossil fuels and the energy sector. The Democrats contended these two oilmen led an administration too friendly to the oil and gas industry and initiated a war of choice in Iraq to serve those interests. Predictably, there were calls for suspending the 18.4-cent- per gallon federal gasoline tax. Charlie Dent It was a terrible idea then just as it is … [Read more...] about Opinion: Biden wants a gas tax holiday. Here are a few better ideas
