When Carson Palmer was finally set free by the Cincinnati Bengals, Oakland had gotten the leader they longed for. Three games into the 2012 season and Palmer already has 879 yards on 80-of-128 passing. He’s thrown five touchdowns and kept interceptions to a minimum with a mere two so far. April 19 (UPI) — Veteran quarterback Alex Smith , who spent 16 seasons in the NFL and battled severe leg injuries to become 2020 Comeback Player of the Year, announced his retirement Monday on Instagram. Smith, 36, spent his final three seasons with the Washington Football Team. He became a free agent in March. Smith entered the league as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft. He spent his first eight seasons with the San Francisco 49ers . He played for the Kansas City Chiefs from 2013 through 2017 and was traded to Washington in 2018. “I was a skinny, no-name recruit who wasn’t suppose to play in college, let alone go to New York as a Heisman finalist, or be the first one to have his name called on draft night,” Smith said in a video he posted to Instagram. “Then, on a routine play, I almost lost everything. When it comes to producing NFL draft prospects, Colorado’s pipeline is drying up. There have been 170 Colorado high school football alums selected in the draft all-time, per CHSAA’s database. But the state’s only seen three players drafted in the past two years, including just one in 2020 (Chatfield’s Dalton Keene) and the possibility of none in 2021 after no Colorado products were invited to the NFL combine. A decade-by-decade comparison shows a similar decline in drafted Coloradans. The state had 34 players drafted in the first seven rounds during the 1990s (there were 12 rounds until 1994), including a record seven in ’96. In the two succeeding decades 22 locals were selected from 2000-09 and 15 from 2010-19. The evolution of an elite high school football player into an NFL draft prospect is never a straight line, and Colorado will never match the numbers of more populous, football-rich states such as Texas, Florida and California.
